Hello everyone,
I have recently been wondering whether the Kallax shelving unit (from IKEA) is really suitable for permanent use on an outdoor terrace. My idea is to use it as a weather-resistant storage space for garden tools and decorations. I’m especially interested in hearing from anyone who has already tried the Kallax shelf on their terrace and what your experiences have been.
- Does the material really withstand weather conditions? (rain, frost, sun)
- How does it handle moisture and mold growth?
- Are there any special protective measures you would recommend?
Maybe there are also some limitations I should consider before purchasing this type of outdoor furniture. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I recently wondered whether the Kallax shelving system (from IKEA) is really suitable for permanent use on an outdoor terrace.Hello,
I can share a bit from my own experience. I had the Kallax on my covered terrace for one season. At first, I was curious to see how it would hold up.
The material is sturdy but definitely not designed for direct exposure to the weather. After a heavy rain shower, I already noticed water stains on the surface. I then applied clear varnish, which improved things somewhat, but it still isn’t 100% weatherproof.

What about moisture and mold formation? The shelf absorbed moisture quite quickly, especially at the edges. If you don’t check and keep it dry regularly, mold can actually develop.
Personally, I ended up using it only for dry items and covering it with a tarp during bad weather. Ideally, it should be placed in a fully covered location. Otherwise, I wouldn’t recommend leaving the Kallax outside permanently.
I understand your concern, especially if you want to store decorations and accessories outdoors. But it’s really important to keep the material’s limitations in mind to avoid disappointment.
Maybe others here have different opinions?

whether the Kallax shelving system (from IKEA) is really suitable for permanent use on an outdoor terraceHello, I completely understand your concerns. IKEA furniture like Kallax is generally designed for indoor use and is made from MDF panels, which can have issues when exposed to moisture.
In general, I always recommend either buying shelving systems specifically designed as outdoor versions or making sure they are properly protected. This means applying a water-repellent treatment, a weatherproof coating, and ideally placing the unit in a sheltered location.

I sometimes keep the Kallax covered in my garden, but I painted the back with water-repellent paint to reduce moisture absorption. Air circulation is also important to prevent condensation.
If you only use the shelf for dry items and check it regularly, it can last for a while.
My advice: avoid long-term storage of damp or bulky items. Using a cover or a roof makes it significantly more durable.
If you have any more questions, I’m happy to help!

Who has already tried the Kallax shelf on their terrace, and what are your experiences with its durability and moisture resistance?I had the shelf outside for six months. It warps when exposed to moisture, becomes soft, and the edges swell. If the panels are not coated, it won’t last long.
It needs to be covered and maintained regularly; otherwise, it’s better to choose a different material.
