Hello everyone, I have a Kallax shelf from IKEA, and one of the wooden panels is quite scratched. Since I would like to keep the shelf and the appearance is very important to me, I am looking for ways to renew or replace the scratched Kallax panel. My question is: where can I find replacement panels for the Kallax shelf, preferably matching in color, material thickness, and finish quality? I am interested in both official sources and alternative manufacturers or DIY options. A detailed guide on how to replace the panel or suitable accessories would also be helpful. Thanks in advance!

That's a great question, NAUFAR! 🙂 I once had a similar issue with a scratched Kallax shelf and was able to reorder it directly from IKEA! Check online or visit your nearest IKEA store for replacement parts. The shelves are usually affordable, and the fit is perfect. If you have some basic DIY skills, replacing it is really straightforward! Good luck with that!

I would like to add that IKEA generally does not officially sell individual replacement panels separately, but rather complete modules or the carcass. However, there are forums and marketplaces where private individuals or traders offer such single panels. Alternatively, you could try taking exact measurements and have a panel cut to size and thickness at a timber specialist store or DIY center. Although this requires some effort, it allows for complete customization, especially regarding the surface finish.

In short: replacement panels for Kallax are hardly ever available as original parts from IKEA. Your best bet is to check hardware stores, bringing your measurements with you. For the surface, I recommend self-adhesive films or paint to cover up scratches.

A bit more detailed: IKEA uses a 16 mm (0.63 inch) thick particleboard with a melamine coating for Kallax shelves. This coating provides a smooth, durable surface. If you want to make a replacement panel yourself, it is important that the substitute material has similar properties to ensure stability and proper fit. I also recommend measuring the dimensions—length, width, and thickness—accurately to the millimeter. Small deviations can lead to a wobbly structure or assembly problems.

If you are handy, it’s worth visiting a specialty wood store where you can order a suitable particleboard, ideally cut to size and coated with a matching decorative foil. Alternatively, there are online suppliers that offer custom cuts. For fastening—since panels are often fixed with dowels or special connectors inside the shelving unit—be sure to check the mounting system of your Kallax carefully. Otherwise, the replacement panel might not fit correctly.

A question for you: Are you looking to update the panel just for appearance or also to improve its durability? This can affect the choice of material.

Thank you for the detailed advice. Mainly, I want to restore the appearance and remove or cover minor scratches. However, if there is a way to make the surface more durable, that would be a welcome bonus. I have the typical white melamine coating. Unfortunately, some of the scratches are quite deep, in my opinion.
