Hello everyone, I have a Kallax shelf from IKEA, and one of the wooden panels is quite scratched. Since I would like to keep the shelf and the appearance is very important to me, I am looking for ways to renew or replace the scratched Kallax panel. My question is: where can I find replacement panels for the Kallax shelf, preferably matching in color, material thickness, and finish quality? I am interested in both official sources and alternative manufacturers or DIY options. A detailed guide on how to replace the panel or suitable accessories would also be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Understood. For superficial scratches, there are special repair kits for melamine or furniture surfaces that you can find online—these usually include wax sticks or repair wax. This can fill in scratches and match the color of the area. For deep damage, it is more practical to replace the panel. Regarding sourcing: you can ask IKEA if they can provide a replacement panel; sometimes this is possible through customer service, even if it is not officially advertised.

Otherwise, I have had good experiences with timber or hardware stores that offer cutting services. There, you can usually choose from various decorative laminates for the surface.

If you like, I can provide more details about repair kits.

Yes, please! That would be fantastic! 🙂 I’ve used repair wax myself before – it makes a lot of sense, especially if you don’t want to replace the entire panel. The thought of taking apart the whole shelf is really overwhelming 😀

Great, for repairs on melamine surfaces, products like a “Teak Repair Set” or wax fillers for furniture, which you can find at hardware stores or online, work well. You will need:

- Color-matched repair wax or wax sticks
- A small spatula or a door handle to apply
- Unused fine-grit sandpaper

Procedure:
1. Clean the damaged area and keep it dry.
2. Press wax into the scratch or apply it with the stick.
3. Remove excess wax with the spatula.
4. Once dry, gently sand to smooth the surface.

The result won’t be 100% like the original panel, but for minor damage, it’s much better than nothing. For larger cracks, I still recommend replacing the entire panel.

Wow, great tips here! 🙂 I repaired mine the same way back then, and it held up really well. If you want, try using self-adhesive furniture film; it hides scratches really effectively and instantly changes the appearance. Plus, you can even create a completely new look – which is awesome! If you decide to get a new board, there are also cool Pinterest ideas on how to customize Kallax with wooden panels.

As an additional note: When cutting the board yourself, be sure to pay close attention to the edge finishing. The original Kallax boards are melamine-coated and come with factory-sealed edges. When the board is cut normally, the cut edges are rough and must be covered with edge banding to prevent moisture damage and poor appearance.

This requires extra time and materials but should not be overlooked. In some timber or hardware stores, you can even have the edge banding applied professionally. This significantly improves the replacement board’s quality, bringing it much closer to the original.

If you have some DIY skills, replacing it is really not complicated!

I can confirm that. It was similar for me—I carefully removed the panel, took exact measurements, and ordered a new panel cut to size with decorative foil.

One thing I’d like to add: The attachment in the Kallax shelf is done using metal pins or plastic dowels, depending on the version. You should replace these if they are damaged, as the precise fit is crucial for stability.

When removing the panel, it’s best to use a flat screwdriver to gently lift it without causing damage.
