rasimHello everyone,
I’m planning to disassemble an IKEA Besta shelving unit soon and reassemble it in another location. I’m wondering which tools would make the dismantling and assembly much easier. The original assembly usually uses a hex key (Allen wrench), but are there any additional tools that can noticeably speed up, simplify, or improve the ergonomics of the process? Maybe special screwdriver bits, cordless drill attachments, or other helpful tools you would recommend?
I look forward to your experiences and advice to make working on my Besta unit easier!

Hello rasim,
for assembling and disassembling IKEA Besta furniture, I recommend using the supplied Allen key along with a suitable cordless drill with adjustable torque settings. This makes it much easier to remove and reinsert tightly secured screws without damaging the screws or components.
Additionally, small plastic wedges are useful to precisely align the fronts or shelves during assembly. A soft rubber mallet can then help gently join all parts together without risking scratches or damage.
Overall, the connecting dowels and screws require a tool that provides both power and control. Screwdrivers with ergonomic handles also help reduce hand fatigue.
Best regards!

Hey rasim, great topic! 😊 I’ve found a cordless drill with adjustable torque to be really useful – it helps prevent screws from being overtightened or the wood from splitting.
And very important: a bit of patience and careful work! I also like to use small angle clamps to keep everything perfectly straight during assembly. A long screwdriver can also be helpful when screws are hard to reach.
You’ve got this! Good luck and let us know how it goes! 🚀

I would also doubt that a cordless drill is the best choice for all screws. Especially with Ikea Besta, screws can be over-tightened if the torque setting is missing or not correctly set.
Precision tools like torque screwdrivers set the standard here. For me, a magnetic bit holder on the screwdriver was also useful to securely hold small screws and prevent losing them.

A lightweight rubber mallet then helps to gently assemble all partsI agree, but please don’t hammer too hard. Ikea furniture is not designed for rough force.
Finally: Those who frequently assemble and disassemble such furniture should consider a multifunctional toolbox tailored specifically for these types of furniture.
