Hello everyone,
I am planning to assemble an IKEA Besta shelving unit, but I was wondering: is there even a clear and reliable guide on how to build the Besta unit completely without using any tools?
I understand that usually screwdrivers or Allen wrenches are needed, but I am looking for a method that requires no tools at all – maybe with clever techniques, click systems, or alternatives that make assembly easier.
Has anyone ever tried something like this or knows a practical solution where no tools are actually necessary?
Thanks for any helpful tips!

I’m curious: Do you have specific reasons for wanting to work completely without tools? Thanks for asking, Palenar. Yes, my interest comes from wanting to assemble the shelf spontaneously over the weekend at a friend’s place, where there isn’t much tool availability and I don’t want to bring or look for extra tools.
Also, I’m wondering if the Besta’s design is innovative enough to allow for tool-free assembly—like some snap-fit systems.
I want to get it done as quickly and easily as possible, without having to pack additional tools. So if there’s a simple solution (click, fit, fix), I’d like to know about it.
The IKEA Besta system inherently requires some basic tools due to its connection mechanisms.
- An Allen key (hex key) is the minimum and will be included.
- Assembly without tools is not recommended, as stability is significantly compromised.
If you really want to assemble without tools, you should consider alternative furniture types that use purely slotting systems.
Otherwise, the recommendation is:
- Keep the Allen key handy during transport.
- Use a small cordless screwdriver for preparation.
This ensures safety and long-lasting durability.

Thank you all for the feedback.
It seems that there really is no instruction manual for assembling Besta entirely without tools.
I will bring the small IKEA Allen key and prepare a bit in advance.
What I found interesting, however, is the understanding that the system relies on precise, stable connections, and that avoiding tools compromises this stability.
Thank you for the detailed and practical advice here!
