Puren63Hello everyone,
I am currently working on adjusting the doors of my Ikea Besta system and would like to know: Which tools are most helpful for properly setting the doors so that they close flush and do not appear misaligned? I have noticed that the doors usually have magnetic hinges with screws that can be fine-tuned, but I’m unsure which tool is best suited for this—especially when it comes to precise adjustments. Is it just a matter of using an Allen key, or are special screwdrivers or other tools recommended?
I would really appreciate it if you could share your experiences or tips on tool brands/types that work best for this. Thanks in advance!

The best advice for adjusting Ikea BESTA doors is to closely examine the hinges themselves. Usually, there are Phillips screws and Allen screws that allow for different adjustments:
- To align the height (vertical adjustment), a Phillips screwdriver is usually needed.
- For lateral adjustment, an Allen key is often required.
A small set of high-quality precision screwdrivers and Allen keys is very useful, as the screws are sometimes quite small and precise adjustment is necessary. A magnetic tip on the screwdriver can also help prevent screws from dropping.
Additionally, a small protractor or spirit level is helpful to check the alignment of the doors after adjustments are made. Be sure not to tighten the screws too much to avoid damaging the mechanism.

Great question, Puren63! 🙂 I’ve adjusted my BESTA doors several times myself and can say that a small Allen key and a well-fitting Phillips screwdriver are essential! I always use the IKEA tools, which are usually sufficient. For fine adjustments, I sometimes also use a small flat-nose plier to hold the hinge mechanism steady while turning the screw to prevent slipping.
I can confirm that—I bought a magnetic screwdriver tip especially for this, and it really made adjusting easier, especially when working overhead or in corners. So don’t worry, it works well—just adjust step by step, and it’s really satisfying when everything closes perfectly! 😉

To effectively adjust Ikea BESTA doors, it is advisable to proceed systematically and use the appropriate tools. The BESTA hinge mechanism allows for three main adjustments:
- Vertical adjustment (height shift)
- Lateral adjustment (parallel to the cabinet surface)
- Depth (hinge opening angle)
For these adjustments, the following tools are recommended:
- Phillips screwdriver size PH1 or PH2 for vertical and depth adjustments
- Allen key, usually 3 mm (1/8 inch), for lateral shifting
Regardless of the screwdriver used, a small measuring tool is useful, such as a spirit level or protractor, to check the doors’ alignment. Special adjustment aids are generally not necessary since Ikea fittings are standardized. If the doors are hanging very unevenly, first check whether the furniture units themselves were assembled level before adjusting the hinges.
This matches my experience as well. In professional settings, simple precision tools are also mostly used, as the hinge mechanism does not require specialized tools.
