I recently purchased an IKEA Platsa system and am currently looking for the best surface care. Since Platsa is mainly made of melamine-coated particle board, I’m wondering which cleaning or maintenance products are most suitable to keep the surface clean, glossy, and undamaged in the long term without harming the protective layer. I want to avoid aggressive substances that could damage the coating, but at the same time, I need to be able to effectively remove stains. Has anyone had experience with specific cleaners or home remedies that work particularly well or, conversely, are not recommended? It would also be helpful to know whether applying a protective treatment like wax after cleaning is advisable, or if that could actually be harmful in this case.

Good morning! Regarding your question about the best surface care for IKEA PLATSA, I can explain several points in detail, especially since the melamine-coated surface has specific requirements. Melamine is generally very resistant to water and many cleaning agents, but harsh and abrasive cleaners can damage the gloss and protective layer over time. Ideally, you should proceed as follows:

- First, remove dust or loose dirt with a microfiber cloth to avoid scratches.
- For light dirt, lukewarm water with a mild dish soap is recommended. This is often sufficient.
- For more stubborn stains, such as grease or fingerprints, you can use a cleaner specifically suitable for melamine surfaces. Make sure it does not contain ammonia or strong solvents.
- Avoid abrasive sponges or steel wool, as these will scratch the surface.

Regarding your question about wax: melamine surfaces usually do not require additional wax or oil treatment, as they are sealed by default. Wax can, in the worst case, settle in uneven spots and leave unpleasant residues or affect the gloss. If you prefer a slightly glossier look, a maintenance product designed for kitchen countertops without a coating is an alternative but not strictly necessary.

I would also be interested to know whether the PLATSA furniture is being used in a kitchen or more in a living area, or if you have children, which might demand special surface requirements. This information would be important for product selection.

Hello marsemjon, I agree with Dilen on many points and would like to provide my response from a more basic perspective, as there are often simpler solutions that work effectively.

The surface of PLATSA furniture, like many IKEA products, is melamine-coated and therefore easy to maintain. My recommendation:

- For regular cleaning, a damp cloth with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap is usually sufficient.
- It is especially important not to leave the surface too wet—standing water on the edges can cause the panel to swell.
- If you have stains like grease, first try a mild cleaner designed for melamine surfaces.
- Avoid aggressive solvents, bleach, and abrasive products to prevent damage to the coating.

When it comes to maintenance, melamine-coated surfaces do not require any wax treatment. Simply wiping with a clean cloth is enough to keep the surface looking good over time.

If you have dirt or grease that has been there for weeks and cannot be wiped away, a special surface cleaner for laminate or melamine furniture may help. Always test it first in an inconspicuous area!

One more thing I find important: it is worth avoiding exposing the furniture to direct strong sunlight, as this can cause the plastic layer to fade.

Do you already have specific stains that you can’t remove? If so, please describe them in more detail!

Regarding your question about wax: Melamine surfaces usually do not require additional waxing or oiling because they are sealed from the factory.

This is an important clarification that I fully agree with. Melamine coatings on furniture such as IKEA PLATSA are factory-sealed, making them resistant to dirt and easy to maintain. Additional waxing is unnecessary and can even be counterproductive, as wax residues may attract dirt.

As a result, I recommend the following approach:

- Regular cleaning with a soft, damp microfiber cloth that will not scratch the surface.
- Use of mild, pH-neutral cleaning agents without harsh chemicals.
- Immediate removal of stains or spills to prevent staining or swelling of the material.

From a technical standpoint, it is important to avoid products containing alcohol, bleach, ammonia, or strong solvents, as these can damage the surface. Care products should also be avoided because melamine-coated surfaces have a factory-applied seal that does not require maintenance.

Finally, a tip: For particularly stubborn stains, such as ballpoint pen or marker ink, sometimes a rubber eraser or specialty plastic stain removers can help, but always test gently first.
