methilo493 Aug 2022 09:17Hello everyone,
I am currently planning an extensive repair of my IKEA Besta system because some screws and connectors have simply worn out or been lost. Since IKEA unfortunately does not offer spare parts individually for such repairs, but only complete sets or components, I want to look for a suitable screw set that is suitable for professional repairs.
My question to the community is: Which screw sets are ideal if you want to carry out a high-quality, durable repair of the IKEA Besta system?
It is important to me that the sets match the original dimensions and types, for example the special DIN lens-head or cylinder-head screws in the correct length, possibly with matching dowels and cam locks.
Are there brands or specific sets you can recommend, perhaps from third-party suppliers? What should be considered when purchasing and using them to ensure the final result is stable and visually clean?
I look forward to your knowledgeable tips and experience reports!

When it comes to screw sets that replicate the IKEA originals, I recommend sets with galvanized or stainless steel screws, which also protect against rust and thread damage. The right length is very important—not too short to ensure stability, but not too long so nothing sticks out.
Just look for sets specifically marketed for furniture assembly. They often include the small cam locks and connecting screws. Otherwise, sets with Torx and hex bits are helpful since those are standard for IKEA.
One more tip: it’s better to buy a little extra than to run out—you don’t really have to worry about screws expiring in storage 😉 Good luck!
I often use standard furniture connectors from the hardware store for repairing Besta units. Important points are:
- Screws with hexagon socket (Allen) heads
- Complete cam lock connectors
- Wood or dowel material that fits properly
Special brands are not necessary; just make sure the quality is good.

I would like to clarify something here because the details in repairing IKEA Besta are often underestimated.
The Besta system mainly uses fittings that consist of a combination of cam locks and cylinder head screws with hex sockets. The diameter of the connecting screws is typically M6, with lengths varying between 30 and 50 mm (1.2 and 2 inches) depending on the installation situation.
If you want to assemble a screw set for a professional repair, I recommend the following:
- Cam locks in their original form (correct size, usually 15-16 mm (0.6-0.65 inches) in diameter), as these provide the stability boost.
- Zinc-plated or stainless steel connector screws with hex sockets to prevent corrosion.
- Matching wooden dowels: Standard wooden dowels with an 8 mm (0.3 inches) diameter generally fit, but can be harder to stabilize in damaged drill holes – high-quality two-component adhesives also help here.
An important side note: Pay attention to the fit and the correct torque – overtightening can damage the wood or the cabinet body, while too loose causes wobbling.
How do you plan to proceed? Are you using a multimeter or caliper to measure the screws precisely?

The result was that many of the connecting screws are actually M6 x 40 mm (1.57 inches) with hex socket heads, but some cabinet parts also use shorter M6 x 30 mm (1.18 inches) screws.
For the cam locks, I’m following the IKEA standard, but I’m not yet sure whether I can reuse the originals or if I’ll need entirely new ones.
I also have wood dowels in various sizes, but for damaged areas, I’ll probably use glue or reinforced dowels.
Now I’m wondering: In your experience, are there sets available that include exactly this mix of sizes (M6 x 30 mm and M6 x 40 mm screws plus cam locks)? Or do I need to buy different sets for this?
Also, how satisfied are you with off-the-shelf cam locks compared to the original IKEA ones? Are there significant quality differences?

edisondan3 Aug 2022 12:02From a technical perspective, the following recommendations apply to repairing IKEA furniture:
- Screws with metric threads M6 in the specified lengths (30 mm and 40 mm) are standard.
- For cam connectors, it is best to use authentic replicas, as the fit is essential for proper function.
- Quality differences in cams can be seen in material hardness and drilling accuracy, which affect long-term stability.
Common sets from hardware stores usually include screws and dowels, but cam connectors rarely meet IKEA standards exactly.
Therefore, it is advisable to check specialized suppliers of furniture fittings who offer compatible but high-quality components.
These sets typically contain all standard lengths and connectors precisely matched to the Besta type.
If there are detailed questions, I can provide more specific sources or product codes.
