Hello everyone, I have noticed some small chips on several corners of my Ikea Besta sideboard’s coating. The affected areas are not very large but quite noticeable because the light gray surface underneath is damaged, revealing the wood or particleboard. Has anyone had experience or tips on how to repair these chipped corners as cleanly, durably, and aesthetically pleasing as possible? I would like to know which materials and tools are best suited, whether special fillers or adhesives are needed, and how to best match the color so that the repair is not visible. Any advice on surface preparation or aftercare would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
A structured approach is essential when repairing chipped corners on Ikea BESTA units. First, thoroughly clean the damaged area and remove any loose parts. For the repair, wood filler or fine putty specifically formulated for plastics or laminate surfaces is suitable. After drying, the area should be carefully sanded to create a smooth surface. For color matching, water-based acrylic paints or touch-up pens that precisely match the BESTA surface color are recommended. Finally, a matte clear coat can be applied to make the repair durable.
Hello ronro, your issue is quite common with furniture that has a laminated surface like BESTA. I recommend paying close attention to the exact material properties before starting the repair: The fronts are usually made of MDF with a melamine or foil coating that can chip off due to mechanical stress. For the repair, you should follow these steps:
- Remove damaged and loose foil edges carefully with a sharp knife, making sure not to apply additional stress.
- Lightly roughen the surface of the particleboard so that the repair filler adheres better.
- Depending on the depth of the damage, use a special furniture filler based on acrylic or synthetic resin. Alternatively, epoxy fillers can be used, although they are more difficult to work with.
- After curing, sand very finely (at least grit 320 to 400).
- Mix the color tone precisely – many recommend acrylic paints with pigments that can be dosed accurately.
- Finally, apply a protective clear coat that replicates matte or satin finishes.
Important: Work in well-ventilated areas during all steps and wear gloves.

Wow, I had the same problem with my BESTA shelf! It was really annoying, but I managed to fix it, and the result looks great! 😊
So: First, I sanded the damaged areas with fine sandpaper and then used wood filler. I got some paint from the hardware store (matte and quite close to the original color) and applied it very carefully with a small brush. After it dried, I gently sanded it again with very fine sandpaper to avoid any shine, and the corner looks like new. The most important thing is to be patient and apply many thin layers instead of one thick one!
So don’t worry – it’s definitely doable!

Hi ronro, I’m happy to help! If you want to repair the chipped corners, you should mainly ensure that the repair materials adhere well to each other and that the color matches. For preparation, it’s best to use isopropanol to remove grease and dirt. Acrylic or epoxy fillers are suitable for filling. Afterwards, you can use acrylic or paint markers, which are usually available in hardware stores. Color matching can be tricky: it’s worth making several small color tests and, if needed, lightening the color with white or gray before fully applying the repair material. Patience is important—let each layer dry thoroughly between applications!
