Hello everyone,

I am currently planning an extensive repair of my IKEA Besta system because some screws and connectors have simply worn out or been lost. Since IKEA unfortunately does not offer spare parts individually for such repairs, but only complete sets or components, I want to look for a suitable screw set that is suitable for professional repairs.

My question to the community is: Which screw sets are ideal if you want to carry out a high-quality, durable repair of the IKEA Besta system?

It is important to me that the sets match the original dimensions and types, for example the special DIN lens-head or cylinder-head screws in the correct length, possibly with matching dowels and cam locks.

Are there brands or specific sets you can recommend, perhaps from third-party suppliers? What should be considered when purchasing and using them to ensure the final result is stable and visually clean?

I look forward to your knowledgeable tips and experience reports!

How satisfied are you with standard cam connectors compared to the originals from IKEA? Are there big quality differences?

From my point of view, IKEA’s cam connectors are a bit different. They usually fit perfectly because IKEA designs them specifically for their products. That said, the affordable third-party sets work quite well in everyday use too.

My advice: If you want real durability and stability, choose stainless steel over zinc-plated, cheap steel cams. They are less prone to wear and rust.

One drawback with some third-party connectors is the material — I had some that slightly deformed under tightening force. So, it’s worth investing a bit more, especially for furniture used daily. 😉

Common sets from home improvement stores usually include screws and wall plugs, but the cam connectors rarely match IKEA standards exactly.

That’s true, and especially for repairs and worn areas, using original parts becomes more important. IKEA cam connectors have a specific design dimension to fit surfaces tightly together.

From your experience, are there sets that include exactly these mixed sizes (M6x30 and M6x40 screws plus cam connectors)?

Yes, based on my experience: these sets are often called “furniture repair kits” and are fairly universal for furniture like the Besta series. You can find them through specialized furniture fitting suppliers or directly from IKEA’s accessory range.

I would recommend choosing a set with at least 20 M6x40 and 10 M6x30 screws, plus 15-20 cam connectors – that way, you’ll be on the safe side.

I also suggest checking the condition of the old holes before starting work, as in the worst case they may need to be fully repaired using wooden dowels or wood filler.

I find the discussion here really helpful – thanks to everyone!

From my own experience, I would add that besides the measurements and material quality, proper preparation is crucial. After removing the old screws and connectors, I checked all the drilled holes: if they were too large, I filled them with wood filler and re-drilled after it dried.

This provides better hold and prevents the new screws from loosening right away.

Sometimes, looking for the perfect screws can be misleading because the underlying mechanics are off. So make sure that the side connection holes in the Besta cabinets are not damaged either.

Personally, I had more problems with inexpensive sets where the cam locks did not fit precisely.

My conclusion: it’s better to buy a good set and take your time with disassembly and preparation.

Allow me to provide a more detailed technical explanation:

For repairing IKEA Besta furniture, the following points should be considered:

- The screw threads for connecting screws are typically metric M6, with partial thread length.
- Cam connectors are precision components with exact tolerances to ensure a tight fit. Low-quality replicas can cause misalignment or a loose connection.
- The strength grade of the screws should be at least 8.8 (standard furniture screws are often 4.8) to ensure lasting stability.
- The screw length is crucial: 30 mm (1.2 inches) is suitable for thinner panels, while 40 mm (1.6 inches) is needed for thicker carcass parts.

For repairs, I often recommend kits specifically advertised as compatible with IKEA furniture. These usually include properly sized M6x30 and M6x40 screws, high-quality cam connectors made from durable alloy, and matching dowels.

Additionally, it is essential to consult assembly instructions or technical drawings to avoid missing any hidden connection points.

If there are any questions regarding installation or the correct application, I am happy to provide a step-by-step guide.
