Hello everyone, I recently purchased an IKEA Besta shelving unit and wanted to ask which screws and connectors are best suited for a particularly durable and stable connection. I am specifically looking for recommendations on components that do not loosen or lose stability even after multiple assemblies and disassemblies. It would be interesting to know if certain materials, thread types, or connection methods (e.g. dowels, cam locks, metal screws) are preferred to maximize the lifespan of the construction. If possible, please also share experiences with IKEA-specific parts or alternative fasteners that have proven to be reliable. Thank you for your expertise!

Your question is very well considered, and I want to say upfront: The original cam locks and wooden dowels used in IKEA Besta are generally designed for durability, but there are a few specific points worth knowing.

First, regarding material quality: IKEA uses steel with a zinc coating, which provides corrosion protection but is not suitable for extreme conditions such as outdoor use. The original metal screws have self-tapping threads, making assembly easier, but this can also lead to some wear with frequent assembly and disassembly. In this case, you can switch to stainless steel screws of similar size, which are much more resistant to wear.

As for the wooden dowels, the denser the wood, the stronger and more durable the joint. IKEA uses red oak, which is affordable but not the most stable wood species. In practice, I recommend using beech or hardwood dowels (8 mm diameter) as an alternative because they fit more tightly and securely.

Another tip is to use nylon or plastic sleeves together with the metal connectors to protect the threads and reduce mechanical stress. This is especially beneficial for shelves that are frequently taken apart.

Finally, a question: Do you want to keep the solution as close to the original as possible, or are you open to using alternative materials and fasteners?

For long-lasting stability with IKEA Besta, I recommend using the original cam lock screws along with matching wooden dowels. For frequent assembly and disassembly, it is better to use stainless steel screws as replacements.

I would like to take it a step further: combining original cam screws with custom-made beech wood dowels provides more stability than simple plastic dowels. It is important that the threaded hole in the carcass is drilled cleanly to prevent the screws from becoming misaligned and the material from fraying.

I have also noticed that with shelves like Besta, which are frequently reassembled, the steel nuts in the connector pieces tend to lose their grip over time. One option is to use mechanical metal connectors instead of plastic connector pieces, such as those commonly found in cabinetmaking for furniture construction. These may require a bit more effort but noticeably increase long-term durability.

A quick question for the original poster: How often do you plan to move or disassemble the furniture? This influences the optimal choice of materials and connection techniques.

Good question. At the moment, I expect to disassemble it occasionally, approximately every 1-2 years, for example, for relocations or changes in the living space. Therefore, the connection should not only be durable but also be able to be taken apart multiple times without the screws wearing out too quickly or the material tearing.

This is precisely where the original IKEA connectors can become problematic, as the particleboard used in Besta is not infinitely durable for internal thread cuts. I therefore recommend:

- Using stainless steel or corrosion-resistant cam locks
- Using metal connectors that can be repeatedly removed (e.g., special quick-release fasteners)
- Adding metal sleeves to pre-drilled holes where possible to protect the material

This significantly extends the lifespan of the assembly. I would avoid reusing old screws if their threads are noticeably worn.
