Hello everyone, I am currently planning to refresh my Ikea Besta furniture and am considering which type of paint would be better suited for this – acrylic or oil-based paint? It is important to me that the surface is durable, resistant to scratches and moisture, and as easy to clean as possible. At the same time, I would like a nice matte to satin finish that does not yellow or lose its gloss too quickly. Does anyone have experience with the differences between acrylic and oil-based paint specifically for furniture like the Besta series? Which paint products have proven effective in practice, and are there clear advantages or disadvantages when using one or the other? I would appreciate any experiences, tips for preparation, and application!

Good question, Laurin. I have painted several pieces of furniture with acrylic lacquer and can share that acrylic lacquers are indeed resistant to mechanical wear and adhere well to smooth surfaces like those on Besta. It is important to apply a sufficient layer thickness and multiple coats.

Oil-based lacquers are more flexible but, as mentioned, not ideal for coated panels. They offer some self-healing properties for micro-scratches through post-curing, which is an advantage on solid wood. However, for furniture with foil or melamine surfaces, this benefit is minimal.

For a child-safe Besta update: acrylic lacquer with a matte finish and multiple coats is recommended.

I agree with that. I would say acrylic lacquer is the everyday go-to here. It is durable, dries quickly – so less time needed for wearing a respirator mask – and doesn’t feel as “oily” if glue residues or fingerprints end up on the surface.

The finish of a good acrylic lacquer remains stable for a long time without yellowing unattractively, which oil-based products tend to do because of their natural oils. So: a clear advantage for acrylic in practical daily life, especially when children are involved.

To sum up: For Ikea Besta, I definitely recommend acrylic lacquer because it:
- adheres perfectly to foil or melamine coatings
- is resistant to scratches, moisture, and cleaning agents
- dries quickly and has an acceptable odor

In my personal opinion, oil-based lacquer lacks practicality for furniture, as it is designed for solid wood and tends to have disadvantages on particleboard. If you want a silky matte, modern finish that is suitable for everyday use, stick with acrylic lacquer, which is the most suitable finish for Besta.
