Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a new wardrobe and am particularly interested in the Ikea PAX models. I would especially like to know which PAX wardrobe models offer truly flexible interior fittings.

I am thinking of adjustable shelves, flexible drawer systems, and modular elements that can be easily reconfigured, for example, if storage needs change. Not only the basic standard models, but also versions that can be individually customized with different interior fittings.

Are there models that stand out for having especially variable interior layouts, possibly with more options than others? I would appreciate a more detailed assessment of which specific PAX variants are especially recommended when it comes to flexibility inside.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Schukri,

your question is very precise, as Ikea PAX actually includes different models with varying features – this is definitely something to consider. Basically, Ikea offers modular PAX frames that you can equip with different interior fittings according to your needs.

The classic PAX frames like 50x58 cm (20x23 inches), 75x58 cm (30x23 inches), or 100x58 cm (39x23 inches) are compatible with flexible interior elements, but the difference often isn’t in the frame itself, rather in the available top units and interior modules.

Especially flexible are the models that can be equipped with multiple hanging rails and adjustable shelves, for example in the PAX full closets with interior fittings like KOMPLEMENT. Here you can:
- Vary shelf height and depth
- Choose drawers with or without dividers
- Install or move clothing rods flexibly

A small point to watch out for: Some of the larger frame models offer higher load capacity for the shelves, which can be useful for heavy storage. If you plan to store, for example, boxes or shoes, height-adjustable shelves or the PAX KOMPLEMENT boxes are recommended.

One more question for you:
What dimensions are you considering, and will the wardrobe mainly be for clothing or a mixed storage (e.g., clothing + accessories + shoes)? Then I can give you more targeted advice.

I think the flexibility of PAX is somewhat overrated. Sure, Ikea designed it to be very modular, and there are many layout options. But regarding “flexible interior fittings,” I would provocatively say that the PAX models are quite similar at their core, even if some appear to offer more interior options.

That may be true, but the real difference between the models is often limited because Ikea uses the same basic frame everywhere. In my opinion, the difference is more practical—how much effort you really put into rearranging or changing the interior parts.

If you ask me, it’s best to go with the classic 100x58 cm (39x23 inches) version: it’s significantly sturdier and offers the best possibilities if you want to make changes later. Everything else feels somewhat half-hearted and is more marketing than genuine flexibility.

To add to the discussion here:

I have personally assembled the PAX systems multiple times, and indeed, the versions with widths of 50cm (20 inches) and 75cm (30 inches) are often more versatile because they integrate and combine better into niches. They offer greater modularity in interior fittings, especially when planning several smaller sections.

That’s true, but the quality of interior components like drawers and organizers varies with different combinations. For very flexible solutions, many use a combination of shelves, hanging rails, and KOMPLEMENT inserts, which can be added or swapped out as needed.

My tip: Use the PAX planner software to work through your exact requirements. This way, you can best identify which models and interior fittings suit you optimally and offer enough flexibility.

In short:

- PAX 100cm x 58cm (39 inches x 23 inches) offers plenty of storage space and flexibility.
- KOMPLEMENT interior fittings are key for individual customization.
- 50cm (20 inches) wide models are better for smaller rooms and modular expansion.

That’s all you need to know if you want to stay flexible.

Hello Schukri and everyone joining the discussion,

to address the initial question in more detail: The Ikea PAX models are generally designed so that almost all modules can be flexibly adjusted inside. The core consists of various KOMPLEMENT interior fittings such as drawer inserts, shelves, pull-outs for shoes, or tie holders.

A very important point is that you can usually choose the interior fittings individually based on the frame width, whether your wardrobe is 50cm (20 inches), 75cm (30 inches), or 100cm (40 inches) wide. Each basic model can be customized with the modular interior fittings to suit your needs.

However, if you are looking for special flexibility, keep in mind:
- Models with sliding doors offer less interior flexibility than those with traditional hinged doors, as sliding doors allow less room for interior modifications.
- PAX frames with greater cabinet height are more versatile because you can install more levels or different configurations inside.

My advice: Use the official PAX planning software carefully and try out different interior fittings. The flexibility comes less from specific models and more from the freedom to adjust, rearrange, or expand the interior elements yourself at any time.

I hope this helps!
