Ayse_nu5125 Jul 2021 18:27Hello everyone, I am currently working on optimizing our shoe storage as part of a new wardrobe system and have therefore chosen the Ikea PAX series. However, I am facing the challenge of selecting the internal fittings in a way that provides the most storage space possible for different types of shoes, keeps the arrangement clear, and above all protects the shoes well and makes them easy to access.
My question: Based on your experience, which Ikea PAX internal fittings specifically make shoe storage easier? I am especially interested in the various shelves, drawers, shoe racks, and possibly special boxes or inserts that you would recommend. How about the compatibility of the interior components to accommodate different shoe sizes or types (boots, sneakers, heels) effectively?
I would really appreciate detailed experiences, tips, and maybe also advice on common mistakes or critical points, so I don’t overlook anything important during the planning. Thanks in advance to everyone who shares their recommendations!

Hello Ayse_nu51, your question is very well thought out and addresses the core of many storage issues! To answer your question: The main challenge with the PAX interior fittings for shoes is to find the best balance between storage capacity and accessibility.
- First, I recommend using adjustable shelves made of glass or wood, which you can flexibly adapt in height and quantity. This ensures that both flat sneakers and taller shoes fit well.
- Additionally, Ikea offers special pull-out shoe racks that can be installed below the standard shelves. These allow easy removal without stacking.
- Drawers with flat bottoms are suitable for heels or children’s shoes that don’t require much height and can be neatly arranged side by side.
- When planning, make sure the shelf depth is at least 35 cm (14 inches) so that common shoe sizes and boots will fit.
- I have also often recommended combining shelves with narrow boxes or baskets inside the PAX to group loose shoes or sports shoes and keep them dust-free.
I would like to know if you plan to store boots standing upright or if you prefer to store them separately, so I can give you further recommendations.

Hello Ayse_nu51, I completely understand your search for the ideal solution – shoes can be tricky to store because they come in different sizes and often awkward shapes.
That’s a very important tip! I recently equipped my PAX wardrobe with standard shelves and thought that 30 cm (12 inches) depth would be enough, but it turned out to be quite tight for my shoes. Since then, I have mounted the hanging rods at 35 cm (14 inches) depth, and it works much better.
I can confirm that from my own experience. If you install the drawers at the bottom, you can place boots or high shoes on the shelves above, which makes access much easier.
So, don’t get discouraged—try the combination of adjustable shelves and drawers. I’m also considering wire inserts for better ventilation of my shoes but haven’t found a suitable option at Ikea yet. Maybe someone here has experience with that?

Drawers with shallow bottoms work well for pumps or children’s shoes.

Brief and to the point:
- Adjustable shelves are most important for shoes, with a minimum depth of 35cm (14 inches).
- Pull-out shelves make access easier.
- Drawers for small shoes or sandals.
- For boots, taller compartments or separate storage are preferable.
This way, you avoid wasting space and keep your shoes well organized.
