Good morning everyone,
I am currently planning my new wardrobe using the Ikea PAX system and have a specific question regarding the interior fittings. Which of the available solutions are best suited especially for storing shoes?
I am particularly interested in aspects such as stability, organization, ventilation, and flexible usability for different types of footwear – from sneakers to boots and dress shoes.
Has anyone gained experience with shelves, shoe drawers, wire baskets, or special shoe racks within the PAX system? Which interior fittings would you recommend if you want to store as much shoe volume as possible efficiently without losing overview?
I look forward to your opinions and tips!

Is ventilation really that important for shoe storage in the PAX system, or is it more of a marketing claim?Speaking from my own experience: ventilation has actually helped with my sports shoes, as the odor didn’t develop as quickly. Wire baskets provide airflow, which is especially valuable for damp shoes. But of course, as you rightly point out, this comes at the expense of stability.
Sometimes it also helps to let shoes dry thoroughly before storing them and to leave the closet door open more often.
My recommendation for the Pax system and shoes:
- Shelves made of glass or wood for organized storage of flat shoes.
- Wire baskets for sports shoes, as they provide better ventilation.
- Shoe drawers for smaller storage spaces to maintain order and allow quick access.
- For boots and taller shoes, be sure to plan for greater compartment heights.
It should be noted that glass shelves have a maximum load capacity of around 25–30 kg (55–66 lbs), which is sufficient for shoes.
The focus is on combining a tidy appearance with functionality.

To include some technical details: the glass is usually 8 mm (0.3 inches) thick and very durable. For heavy shoes or boots, wooden or metal floors are more stable.
Wire baskets allow for air circulation, but they tend to collect more dust and small items can fall out, so these points should be considered.
I use a mix of drawers and shelves, which lets me store different types of shoes efficiently while keeping everything organized.

A combination of different interior fittings usually makes sense to optimize the use of space. Thanks for the good tip, that really seems logical to me for accommodating shoes of varying heights.

Thank you very much for the very helpful assessments so far!

However, I do see the advantage when it comes to damp shoes, so I would recommend wire baskets for sports shoes as well. Perhaps a combination would be ideal.
