Hello everyone,

I’m about to buy the Ikea PAX wardrobe and plan to store not only clothes but also some quite heavy items inside. My question is: From your experience, which PAX drawers are best suited to sustainably carry heavy loads without the drawer sides bending or the runners wearing out quickly? I’m particularly interested in specific recommendations regarding materials, depth, and load capacity, as I don’t want to order the standard drawers blindly. Are there any special versions or additional reinforcements you would recommend?

I’m looking forward to your experiences and advice!

The standard PAX drawers are designed for typical household items but may not handle very heavy loads easily. If you plan to store many heavy objects, I recommend PAX drawers with metal side panels, such as the Maximera metal drawers. These provide better stability and can support more weight than the plastic or wooden versions.

Additionally, you should pay attention to the quality of the hinges and drawer slides. Full-extension metal slides offer good stability and even weight distribution. It is also important not to exceed the specified load capacity of the drawers, as this can affect their functionality in the long term.

It’s important to critically consider how exactly Ikea defines the load limits. Are these purely guideline values under ideal conditions, or have they conducted real-world tests?

I would recommend, if possible, to also look at user experiences with heavy loads. Often the drawers can technically hold more weight, but the sliding mechanisms or attachment points may fail sooner than expected.

Are metal drawers really significantly more durable than wooden ones, or is the issue more related to the overall PAX system design? It would be interesting to see if there are any reports on long-term use.

Metal drawers in PAX are clearly better for heavy items.

MAXIMERA drawers with metal sides and full extension are sturdy and run smoothly.

I would avoid wooden drawers and smaller versions if they need to hold a lot of weight.

From a technical perspective, the load capacity of drawers in the PAX system depends on several factors:

- Material of the side panels: Metal side panels are more durable than particleboard or MDF with a foil coating.
- Drawer slides: Full-extension metal slides support heavier loads as they distribute weight more evenly and protect the sliding mechanism.
- Drawer bottom: Thicker bottom panels can carry more weight without sagging.

IKEA states a maximum load of 15 kg (33 lbs) for the MAXIMERA variant, which can actually handle higher weights if the drawers are properly installed and the weight is evenly distributed.

Question: Approximately how many kilograms per drawer will need to be supported? For example, do you want to store tools, large books, or other heavy household items? Depending on this, a combination of metal drawers for heavy items and standard wood drawers for lighter ones might be a good solution.

Thank you for the detailed explanation and the valid follow-up question! The plan is to load individual drawers with up to 20 kg (44 lbs), mainly with tools and electronic accessories. Books less so, but heavy cables, power supplies, and small devices are definitely included.

So far, I have focused on the MAXIMERA drawers, but the 15 kg (33 lbs) limit has made me somewhat uncertain. Is it possible to exceed this limit in practice, or should I rather look for reinforcements?

I have also noticed that there are different installation sizes available – do wider drawers help with load distribution, or do they not affect the weight capacity?
