Hello everyone,

I’m about to buy the Ikea PAX wardrobe and plan to store not only clothes but also some quite heavy items inside. My question is: From your experience, which PAX drawers are best suited to sustainably carry heavy loads without the drawer sides bending or the runners wearing out quickly? I’m particularly interested in specific recommendations regarding materials, depth, and load capacity, as I don’t want to order the standard drawers blindly. Are there any special versions or additional reinforcements you would recommend?

I’m looking forward to your experiences and advice!

The plan is to load individual drawers with up to 20 kg (44 lbs)

This is already a critical load for standard Maxima-type drawers. I would not only rely on metal side panels but also check whether the runners are strong enough and if the mounting is properly secured.

That is correct, but in the long term, the load distribution on the drawer bottom may also cause issues – this can only be resolved with a reinforced bottom panel or an additional internal support.

I question whether the Pax system is really the most suitable choice for regular loads over 15 kg (33 lbs). Perhaps modular heavy-duty drawers from the accessory market or a different system would be better suited.

I completely understand your uncertainty. I have personally loaded PAX units with rather heavy items, and depending on how often you open the drawers, you can notice differences in durability.

What helped me was to store heavy objects as low as possible and to avoid stacking them, instead distributing the weight evenly. I also used the MAXIMERA drawers – yes, they feel sturdy, but I usually keep it just under 20 kg (44 lbs) per drawer, even though I believe they can handle a bit more.

I wouldn’t worry too much if the drawers are mainly filled with tools or similar items, as long as you don’t significantly exceed the standard load capacity.

For heavy loads in PAX, the MAXIMERA drawers with metal sides are the best choice.

Deeper and wider drawers make a difference because wider drawers put more strain on the runners.

If you want 20 kg (44 lbs) per drawer, I would rather use several smaller drawers to distribute the weight.

There are no official reinforcements from Ikea, but wooden base plates or metal supports can sometimes help.

That is an important point. The PAX is primarily designed for clothing, not for heavy-duty storage.

I agree. From a technical perspective, distributing the load across multiple drawers with less weight each leads to significantly better long-term stability.

Additionally, stronger shelving units could be used alongside or below if larger or heavier items truly need to be stored.
