Hello everyone, I’m planning to integrate an Ikea Pax wardrobe into my new rental apartment, but I have concerns about the often limited wall mounting options and the possible damage to the apartment. Therefore, I’m particularly interested in the question: Which Ikea Pax wardrobe models are recommended for rental apartments if, first, you need flexibility in assembly and installation, and second, you want the least invasive option for the apartment? It would also be helpful if you could share your experiences regarding the weight, stability, and different interior layout options. Thanks for your individual assessments!

For me, Pax wardrobes 35 cm (14 inches) deep with hinged doors are the best choice for rental apartments. Less drilling, lighter, and sufficiently stable. I would avoid sliding doors because of the mounting.

Pax models with reduced depth and hinged doors offer a good balance between storage space and wall-friendliness. It is also recommended to fix the wardrobes at floor level, not just to the wall. This reduces the risk of damage in rental properties.

I find this initial question important because it directly addresses the balance between functionality and tenant protection. Flexibility also includes the ability to expand the system modularly without major modifications. From my experience, using freestanding legs instead of full installation helped me, so that there was hardly any residue left when moving out.

Thank you for the many helpful and diverse perspectives! I find the comments about depth and door types, as well as the topic of wall mounting versus base feet, particularly interesting. One more question: Does anyone have experience with the Pax systems that come with integrated drawer slides? Which models or versions are especially sturdy and recommended for rental apartments, where the wardrobe is not meant to be frequently reassembled?

Drawer slides are generally durable, especially the full-extension soft-close ones from Ikea. For rental apartments, I recommend cabinets with a depth of 35cm (14 inches), as the load on the drawers and their fittings is lower. Shallower options are less prone to jamming or excessive pressure on the side panels. Regular inspection and, if necessary, cleaning of the runners also improves longevity.

The drawer mechanism is a critical aspect, especially if the system is used frequently. In rental apartments, it’s important to avoid overloading the drawers to maintain their stability. I also recommend choosing drawer fronts that are easy to remove, which makes them easier to transport during a move.
