Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into purchasing an Ikea PAX wardrobe system for our family and would like to know which PAX variants are especially popular with families. I am particularly interested in solutions that not only provide storage space but are also practical for daily family life—such as options that work well for parents’ and children’s clothing, possibly with special compartments for kids’ items or available extensions for more flexibility over time.
I am thinking about dimensions, interior fittings like drawers, clothes rails, or shelves, as well as whether doors are recommended or if open versions are better—also considering dust protection and ease of overview. Maybe you have experience with certain combinations that have proven particularly suitable for families in everyday use.
What would you recommend when planning the PAX specifically for a family with two children? Are there models or additional features you find especially practical? I look forward to your opinions and experiences!

I see an important aspect that hasn't been considered yet: the load capacity of the shelves and hanging rods. Families often have heavier loads, for example due to thick winter coats, sports equipment, or bags.
What are your experiences regarding whether the standard Pax shelves and rods can withstand this over time? Are there any recommendations for reinforced models or accessories to improve durability?

Here is a brief guide on how families can best configure the PAX system:
1. Choose the size: For families, I recommend at least two cabinets each 100 cm (39 inches) wide to ensure enough space.
2. Interior organization:
- At the top, hanging rods for long coats and jackets for adults.
- In the middle, drawers and compartments for underwear, socks, and children’s clothing, easily accessible for kids.
- At the bottom, open shelves equipped with boxes, which are especially practical for toys.
3. Door choice: Sliding doors save space but are less flexible with pull-outs. Hinged doors provide better access.
4. Stability: For heavy loads, make sure to use additional reinforcements, for example, by using extra fasteners included in IKEA accessories.
Caution during installation: Load capacity depends greatly on proper wall mounting.

Regarding stability: About three years ago, we installed two 100x58cm (39x23 inches) PAX wardrobes, and they really hold up well – all the jackets, backpacks, even the child’s helmet fit without any problem. Just make sure to secure them properly!
So far, nothing has broken or sagged for us. 😊

I wanted to add: For families, a PAX wardrobe with an integrated mirror on the door is often very useful. It saves extra space and helps children orient themselves better. 🪞😊
In addition, bins and boxes for small items inside the PAX are essential. They encourage the little ones to keep things organized themselves!

I also really like the idea of the boxes! We currently have seven storage boxes, four of which are reserved for children's clothing. The system can be adjusted so flexibly. 😍

One brief addition regarding the selection of doors:
- Hinged doors allow full access to drawers and shelves
- Sliding doors save space but somewhat limit the use of pull-outs
Families with young children often prefer hinged doors because better visibility and quicker access make everyday life less stressful. The cleaning requirements for the surfaces differ only slightly.
Overall, the decision depends on the situation; room size and the importance of dust protection play a role.
