Hello everyone,
I am considering fitting my small apartment with Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets, but I am unsure which cabinet series or specific modules from the Metod system work best for tight spaces. Flexible storage solutions that maximize storage capacity without appearing too bulky are important to me. Are there versions that are especially compact or can be adapted modularly to small floor plans? I look forward to recommendations and experiences, especially regarding dimensions and functionality. Which Metod kitchen cabinets suit small apartments well, and how can the system be best used to optimize space and organization?

It might depend more on the overall layout planning than just the depth.I agree with that, so I’m interested to know if anyone has examples of specific configurations using 60cm (24 inches) depth measurements in very small rooms? I’m also curious about how to optimize walking paths when standard depths are used. Are there proven combinations in the Metod system that don’t feel too cramped despite the 60cm (24 inches) depth?
I find the Metod series extremely flexible! In my small apartment, I used 60cm (24-inch) base cabinets combined with an open shelving unit. This makes the kitchen feel much more spacious! Additionally, I installed a pull-out cabinet that provides a lot of storage space for spices.
It’s best to try everything out with the Ikea planner before purchasing – you can customize the modules very precisely. Good luck, there is definitely a lot you can get out of it!

Another important consideration for small kitchens is the choice of doors and fronts. Swing doors require more clearance in front of the cabinets, whereas sliding doors or pull-outs minimize this space requirement. In the Metod system, pull-out drawers are more space-efficient and ergonomic in small areas.
Additionally, using open shelves can positively affect the sense of space, as they do not overwhelm the kitchen but still provide storage for frequently used items.
Another advantage: wall cabinets placed higher, for example 140 cm (55 inches) above the countertop edge with an 80 cm (31 inches) gap to the bottom of the wall cabinets, create a feeling of height despite the small floor area.

A proven strategy is to use pull-out pantry cabinets (narrow, tall cabinets with many small drawers) under the countertop. The idea of pull-out pantry cabinets sounds interesting. However, I wonder how practical they are for everyday use, especially regarding their width. Are there any experiences or recommendations on which sizes actually work well? Also, how about their stability and load-bearing capacity?

With a narrow width of about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches), they can be installed almost anywhere, often next to the sink or stove. They are sturdy enough to hold spices, bottles of oil, and smaller kitchen utensils.
The small drawers are well organized and help keep things tidy. I have been using one for years in my small apartment and can only recommend planning the system with appropriate fittings to ensure the drawer operates smoothly.
One possible limitation: it’s worth checking which widths of pull-out pantry cabinets are currently available from suppliers like Ikea, as they offer different sizes.
