Hello everyone,
I am planning to equip my kitchen with the Ikea Metod system and am currently comparing the front panel materials. I have the question: Which of the available Metod front materials are particularly scratch-resistant?
It is very important to me that the fronts maintain their appearance during daily use, as I know from experience how quickly kitchen fronts can develop small scratches or signs of wear.
Does anyone have reliable information or personal experience regarding the scratch resistance of the various Metod front materials, such as lacquer, foil, real wood, or glass? Which materials are truly durable, and what should I pay attention to when purchasing if I want maximum robustness?
I look forward to your detailed assessments and tips.

I can also confirm that foil fronts tend to be quite prone to scratches in our experience. We have a Metod kitchen with high-gloss lacquered fronts, and these actually hold up quite well. Of course, there are minor micro-scratches that are visible up close but hardly noticeable in everyday use.
What I find important is maintenance. Especially with lacquered surfaces, you should avoid abrasive cleaners or rough sponges. Gentle cleaning makes a big difference in keeping the surface intact.
One more tip: keep sharp knives away from the fronts. Often, most scratches are caused by incorrect use rather than the material itself.

For clarification and summary:
- Foil: Affordable, less scratch-resistant, slight wear visible
- Lacquer (mostly PU lacquer): Applied in multiple layers, good scratch resistance, requires more maintenance
- Real wood: Visually appealing, less scratch-resistant, may develop a patina
- Glass: Highest scratch resistance, prone to breakage, shows fingerprints
The choice should be based on the intended use and household priorities. For heavy daily use, a matte lacquered front or glass is recommended.
Additionally, some fronts offer special surface treatments (e.g., scratch-resistant lacquers) from the manufacturer. It is worth inquiring at the Ikea store, as not all variants are regularly available.

We also have lacquered fronts, but in a matte finish and especially with small children at home. Our fronts have been through quite a few “stress tests,” but they show surprisingly few scratches.
Of course, on close inspection you can see some signs of wear, but in everyday use it’s hardly noticeable. For me personally, this was a big advantage compared to my previous foil finish, which quickly looked worn out.
One thing I find particularly important: cleaning sharp stains promptly and avoiding abrasive sponges helps protect the surface.
Hello @PAUCURT, what does your planned kitchen look like? Aside from scratch resistance, are you also prioritizing other features like a matte finish or color options?
