Hello everyone,

I am planning to repaint my Ikea Besta furniture and want to choose a fresh, modern color scheme that fits well in the living space. Since the material of the BESTA units is usually a smooth surface made of coated wood or MDF with a melamine finish, I wonder: which types of paint are particularly recommended for a fresh repaint of Ikea BESTA that will adhere well, remain durable, and look appealing?

I am also interested in whether lighter tones or stronger colors are better suited, and if there are any special considerations regarding the type of paint. Has anyone had experience with a specific color choice or recommendations that take both design and technical aspects into account?

I look forward to your tips and ideas!

For Ikea BESTA, I definitely recommend applying a primer before painting. Light colors like white or pastels appear fresh and timeless. If you want something bold, teal or dark green are good choices. It is important to use a durable acrylic paint.

When choosing paint for a fresh finish on Ikea BESTA furniture, several factors should be considered:

- Material properties: The melamine coating requires a specially adhesive primer, ideally a bonding primer for smooth surfaces.
- Color tone: Light colors such as white, cream, or soft gray create a timeless freshness. Bold tones like royal blue or olive green are modern but require good coordination with the room.
- Type of paint: Water-based acrylic paints are environmentally friendly, adhere well, and are durable.

My tip: Apply a test area before the final painting. This allows you to assess how the color interacts with the room lighting and how durable the surface will be.

Absolutely sensible! I once painted my BESTA in mint green, and it looked really fresh and was a real eye-catcher. Proper preparation is definitely important; otherwise, the nice paint will start peeling off faster than you can notice. For me, a look that’s a bit fresh, lively, and not too ornate is the perfect combination.

I think all the advice about pastel or neutral tones is fine, but honestly: who wants another piece of furniture that looks like a boring clinic? Why not go for bold red or bright yellow?

Of course, it’s a matter of personal taste, but especially with a piece of furniture like BESTA, which is popular with many people, you should be allowed to make a statement with the color.

Even better: why not simply choose a matte black finish? It’s absolutely modern, easy to maintain, and super stylish. For me, a fresh finish also means not being taken over by mainstream trends.

Why not just use a matte black finish?

Matte black can certainly look very elegant, but it’s important to consider that dust and fingerprints tend to be more visible on such surfaces. In practice, this can make maintaining a freshly painted Ikea BESTA unit more challenging.

Alternatively, neutral gray tones or anthracite shades are a good option as they offer a similarly modern appearance but are less sensitive. Additionally, regardless of the color, it’s important to use high-quality paints that are specifically designed for coated furniture.
