RenblaHello everyone,
I recently purchased some furniture from the Ikea Besta series and would like to extend the lifespan of these pieces as much as possible. Therefore, my question is: based on your experience, which care products or cleaning agents are best suited to preserve both the appearance and the stability of the BESTA furniture over many years? I am especially interested in products recommended for surface care that do not cause damage or leave residues. Additionally, it would be helpful to know if there are any specific care instructions that should be followed, for example regarding the laminate surface or fittings.
Thank you in advance for your tips and experiences!

Hello Renbla,
Here is a clear overview of how to properly care for your BESTA furniture:
- Cleaning: It’s best to use a soft, slightly damp cloth with a small amount of mild dish soap. Avoid harsh cleaning agents or solvents, as they can damage the veneered surfaces.
- Care products: For the surfaces, I recommend special furniture care products based on silicone or wax. These protect the surface from moisture and dirt without causing damage. It is important that the product is not too aggressive and does not leave greasy residues.
- Fittings & hinges: Every few months, apply some lubricant oil (e.g., Teflon or graphite oil) to keep everything moving smoothly and to prevent noise.
- Common mistakes: Often, too much water is used for cleaning or aggressive cleaners are applied, which can cause the veneer to swell or become dull. Direct sunlight can also cause discoloration.
In summary: Cleaning routines using mild products and occasional care with suitable furniture oil or wax are your best allies for a longer lifespan.
If you like, I can provide more detailed product recommendations. Best regards!

Hello Renbla,
First of all, an important question: In what environment are your BESTA furniture pieces located? Are they in dry, heated rooms or perhaps in a kitchen with moisture and temperature fluctuations? This greatly affects the proper care.
Regarding care products:
- The surfaces of BESTA furniture are often made of melamine or foil coating, which are durable but still require gentle treatment. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents containing ammonia, alcohol, or bleach.
- I recommend using pH-neutral cleaners. Special furniture care products based on polishing wax or polymers can help conceal minor scratches and create a protective layer.
- For any glass panels (if present), it’s best to use an ammonia-free glass cleaner to avoid damaging the frames.
- To lubricate running and sliding mechanisms, a sprayable Teflon oil is suitable; apply sparingly to prevent grease stains on the furniture.
- Also be careful with heat and liquids: Never place hot objects directly on the surface and wipe away any spills immediately to prevent damage to the foil.
I can only agree with that; it is a common mistake many make.
If you like, I can also provide a step-by-step care routine tailored specifically to your situation.
Best regards!

Hello Renbla,
I just wanted to respond to what has already been said here and share my own experience. I have had BESTA furniture for several years now and was initially unsure how to best care for it since it is not made of solid wood.
What helped me:
- I usually use a microfiber cloth with warm water. Sometimes I add a small amount of a neutral all-purpose cleaner. It is important that the cloth is not too wet to prevent moisture from seeping into the joints.
- To keep the surfaces looking nice longer, I occasionally apply a furniture care product that is silicone-free, to avoid leaving greasy residues.
- A little anecdote: I once had stubborn stains from spilled coffee and was able to remove them with a gentle cleaner without damaging the laminate. However, I had to act quickly.
What I also learned: The furniture does not like direct sunlight, so it is best to choose spots that do not get sun all day. This helps preserve the color.
I can only confirm this from personal experience! After making this mistake once, I bought a heat-resistant mat.
I hope this helps you!
