Good morning everyone, I recently purchased the Ikea Brimnes wardrobe and am now looking for suitable care products to keep the furniture in good condition over the long term. I am especially interested in recommendations for cleaning agents or care oils that do not damage or discolor the surfaces. Does anyone have experience with products that are particularly suitable for the painted MDF panels of the Brimnes? Which products have worked well for you without leaving unwanted residues or dull spots afterwards? I would appreciate any tips, including recommendations on how often to apply them.

Hello japineo, generally, IKEA furniture like the Brimnes series is often made from coated particleboard or MDF, which requires specific care instructions. For cleaning, mild, neutral cleaners without abrasive ingredients work well. For example, a slightly damp microfiber cloth with a bit of dish soap diluted in water is usually sufficient. You should avoid aggressive substances like alcohol or ammonia, as they can damage the surface.

For maintenance, I often use special furniture polish designed for lacquered surfaces, which is slightly moisturizing and does not leave a film. Some users also recommend a Brimnes care booklet from IKEA itself, which includes cleaning and maintenance tips. The key is not to apply too much product and to clean the furniture regularly but gently.

I would like to question the recommendations a bit, especially regarding the use of furniture polish. In my tests, applying wax- or oil-based polishes on stained MDF surfaces often resulted in unwanted gloss effects or the formation of greasy residues that become harder to remove over time.

Perhaps it would be better to use cleaning products that are not conditioning, since the piece of furniture is coated with a protective lacquer that essentially does not require additional oiling.

Has anyone here made precise long-term observations specifically about these polish-like products? A factual, technical discussion would be helpful.

That’s a very good point, thanks for clarifying. In fact, furniture polishes should be used sparingly and with purpose. For painted or lacquered furniture, occasional cleaning with mild agents is usually sufficient, while avoiding harsh substances.

Perhaps it can be summarized like this: daily cleaning with a damp cloth, occasional light polishing only when really necessary, and avoiding greasy polishes that might leave residues.

Hello everyone! I understand that caring for Brimnes furniture can be a bit tricky, and many people feel uncertain about it. I’ve had my wardrobe for about a year now and usually clean it with a damp cloth and occasionally a mild dish soap.

What I’ve learned is that more is not always better. Especially with these simpler surfaces, using too many products can actually cause damage or lead to unwanted changes in the finish.

For me, it’s important to dust the furniture regularly and remove stains quickly before they set in.

If you have any questions, japineo, feel free to ask!

This is exactly what I have been looking for, as I want to avoid the surface of my Brimnes becoming spotty or uneven after a few months. Are there specific product recommendations for cleaning agents that work well on stains without using polish?

Also interesting: How often should this cleaning be done if the piece of furniture is, for example, in a living room that is not used very heavily?
