Brigitte335 May 2019 08:17Good morning everyone, I recently purchased the Ikea Brimnes wardrobe and am now preparing to assemble it. Since the piece includes quite a few parts and some complex steps, I would like to know if you have any tips on how to simplify the assembly of the Ikea Brimnes. I am especially interested in advice on useful tools, practical preparation steps, and possibly tips on how to better organize the assembly process to avoid mistakes or delays. I appreciate any suggestions or experiences, as a systematic approach is important to me. Thanks in advance!
Hello Brigitte33, I think your question is very well phrased! Regarding the Ikea Brimnes: It is important to stay patient and follow the instructions carefully, step by step. It is advisable to spread out all parts on a large, well-lit surface and organize the components according to the numbers in the manual. A cordless drill is convenient, but if the torque is too high, screws can be damaged – so work gently and with control. If you are working alone, it can help to temporarily fix small parts with tape to prevent them from shifting. If necessary, I’ve read that having a second person can make some assembly steps much easier.

I would recommend spreading out all the parts first and sorting them according to the instructions. That’s true, it saves you from the dreaded "Where is part B4 now?" scavenger hunt. The last time I built a Brimnes, I laid out all the pieces on the floor like a puzzle. And yes, a cordless drill is invaluable, but don’t overtighten—otherwise, you might end up making a DIY wooden sculpture. 😉
Here’s a little tip from me: a few self-adhesive labels with numbers really help keep things organized. Sometimes the parts look so similar that you can easily mix them up.
Hello Brigitte33, for an optimized result with the Brimnes wardrobe, I recommend the following approach:
- First, make sure to read the entire instruction manual before starting the assembly, even if it seems tedious at first.
- Set up a large, clean workspace, ideally with good lighting and some padding to prevent any damage to edges.
- Sort the screws and fittings carefully by type and size to avoid mistakes during assembly.
From a technical point of view: when screwing in the screws, always adhere to the recommended torque range to prevent chipping of the particleboard used in the Brimnes. Use a torque screwdriver or a torque-limiting attachment for your cordless drill if possible.
Having two people is very helpful, especially when fitting the side panels and doors, as they need to be aligned precisely. Small inaccuracies can otherwise affect the overall appearance.
One more important tip: inspect the components for any transport damage and check, before fully inserting screws, whether all the holes are properly aligned. Sometimes the pre-drilled holes can be slightly off, and forcing the screws can weaken the wood material.
Can you tell me if you already have experience working with particleboard furniture or if this is your first assembly of this kind?

Can you tell me if you already have experience working with particle board furniture or if this is your first time assembling this type? Thank you very much, PIN66, for the detailed tips! I have actually assembled several Ikea pieces before, but the Brimnes wardrobe is probably the largest furniture item I have ever put together. I am familiar with particle board, but with previous furniture I sometimes had issues with screws not holding properly or parts that could easily chip. That’s why I’m specifically asking about the right way to handle it.
I will definitely take your other advice about using a cordless drill and having two people to help.
