Paukeo63Hello everyone,
I recently purchased an Ikea Metod kitchen countertop and want to make sure I take proper care of it so it stays attractive and functional over the long term. I am especially interested in the care instructions recommended by Ikea itself, but also from your experience: What should be absolutely avoided, which cleaning products are suitable or completely off-limits, and are there any special tips to prevent scratches or water damage?
It would also be interesting to know if you are aware of differences between the materials used for Metod countertops and whether the care instructions vary significantly.
Thanks in advance for your expert tips and advice!

Hello Paukeo63,
Regarding your question about caring for Ikea Metod countertops, I can explain some points that are often also mentioned in Ikea’s materials. Basically, there are different materials used for Metod countertops, such as laminate, solid wood, or stone-look finishes, each requiring its own care instructions.
In general:
- Avoid standing water on the countertop to prevent swelling and warping, especially with wood countertops.
- Use a soft, damp cloth and mild cleaning agents like dish soap for cleaning. Abrasive cleaners and stiff brushes are not recommended as they can scratch the surface.
- For wood countertops, Ikea usually recommends regular oil treatment to protect the surface.
- Avoid heat exposure from hot pots or pans directly on the countertop, as this can cause damage.
- Try to prevent scratches; always use a cutting board for chopping.
These guidelines are basically reflected in Ikea’s care instructions. If you have more specific questions, feel free to ask!

Hello Paukeo63 and everyone else!
I think your question is a great starting point because the topic of maintenance is often seriously underestimated when it comes to Metod countertops. 😂
From my own experience, these surfaces are generally quite durable, but not indestructible. They’re not natural stone or anything like that. So:
- Never place hot pots directly on the surface. The finish or laminate can be damaged.
- Scratches are not easy to repair on laminate. So always use a cutting board!
- Stains can be easily removed with a bit of dish soap in warm water—just wipe gently.
Regarding wooden boards: they really do need oiling from time to time—but please use the Ikea oil or something similar, otherwise the surface can become blotchy.
And finally, my secret tip: occasionally wiping with a barely damp cloth (not wrung out dry, just moist) brings back the shine!
So, a little care goes a long way—the countertop will thank you with a long service life. 😉

These surfaces are usually quite durable, but not indestructible.I don’t fully agree with that. Many consider Metod countertops to be mass-produced with mediocre quality, looking and feeling cheap. I would even argue that a custom carpenter-made solid wood countertop easily outperforms the Ikea product when it comes to durability and maintenance.
Not that I think care instructions are completely irrelevant, but I believe we should be honest: these countertops are primarily designed for tight budgets and quick solutions.

I find it unfortunate how often Ikea solutions are almost idealized here, even though it’s better to stay realistic. But well, to each their own.
