Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a new bookshelf and am particularly interested in the BILLY shelves from IKEA, as they are very popular and versatile. My question is: Which BILLY shelves are suitable for really heavy books?

I have some hardcover reference works and art books that are quite heavy, and I want to avoid the shelf bending or becoming unstable. I am especially interested in recommendations regarding specific models, material thicknesses, and whether there are special versions or reinforcements designed for high loads.

Also: What technical terms or key points should I consider when purchasing to assess the load-bearing capacity?

I look forward to your experiences, tips, and specific details about the load limits of the BILLY series!

I recommend using shelves that are 28 mm (1.1 inches) thick

I agree with that. For heavy reference books, 28 mm (1.1 inches) thick shelves are the safest choice.

Proper wall fixing is equally important. Without it, stability is severely compromised.

It is also important not to exceed the recommended maximum load per shelf to avoid long-term damage.

Alternatively, there are sometimes special shelving units with steel frames available if the books are exceptionally heavy.

Regarding the question "Which BILLY shelves are suitable for heavy books?" I would like to add:

- IKEA BILLY shelves with 28 mm (1.1 inch) thick shelves are generally designed to support higher loads.
- For particularly heavy books, the BILLY/Förstärka model is recommended, as it features reinforced shelves.
- The official maximum load per shelf for standard shelves is about 20 kg (44 lbs).
- Secure wall mounting significantly reduces tipping and stability issues.
- Even load distribution is important to minimize sagging.
- Additional measures such as metal brackets or extra supports can further improve stability.

If in doubt, it is advisable to consider alternative shelving systems with higher load capacities, especially for very heavy collections.
