Hello everyone,

I bought a Billy shelf from IKEA and am very happy with it. However, what bothers me is that the shelves tend to shift quite easily when I bump the unit or take books off it. Can anyone explain how I can securely fix the shelves in place to prevent slipping without damaging the shelf or the boards?

I’m looking for a permanent solution that will hold firmly even under somewhat heavier loads. I’d appreciate any tips, including simple aids or minor modifications.

Hello baleti,

to prevent the shelves in a Billy bookcase from slipping, I recommend first checking the standard shelf supports carefully. These are often quite loose and can cause the shelves to shift.

A simple and proven method is to use small rubber or silicone pads between the shelf and the shelf support. These significantly increase friction and prevent slipping. Small strips of double-sided tape or self-adhesive anti-slip strips can also help.

Another option is to countersink the shelves with additional screws or wooden dowel connections, but this is more labor-intensive and alters the furniture.

Hello baleti,

I had the same problem with my Billy shelf a while ago, and I found it quite annoying when the shelves wobble every time I put things in or take them out.

What helped me was actually sticking small rubber pads, usually used as furniture gliders, next to the shelf supports. These provide more stability, and the whole thing feels much sturdier.

Maybe this will help you too! I know it’s not a high-tech solution, but it works well for everyday use.

Use rubber or silicone bumpers. Simply stick them onto the shelf supports to increase friction and prevent the shelf from slipping.

Hey baleti,

I added small self-adhesive foam strips to my Billy shelves. They are inexpensive, easy to apply, and hold very well. Also, the material protects both the floors and the shelf.

My shelf is now much more stable, and I didn’t have to drill or screw anything 🙂

Hello baleti,

To secure the shelves in the Billy bookcase permanently against slipping, the following options are practical:

1. Use mounting brackets: Small metal brackets attached to the back panel and under the shelf can improve stability.

2. Enlarge dowel holes: Fit the shelf precisely into the side supports using wooden dowels.

3. Self-adhesive rubber pads: Increase friction and prevent lateral movement.

Choose the option depending on how removable and reversible you want the solution to be.
