Hello everyone,

I bought a Billy shelf from IKEA and am very happy with it. However, what bothers me is that the shelves tend to shift quite easily when I bump the unit or take books off it. Can anyone explain how I can securely fix the shelves in place to prevent slipping without damaging the shelf or the boards?

I’m looking for a permanent solution that will hold firmly even under somewhat heavier loads. I’d appreciate any tips, including simple aids or minor modifications.

In addition to the previous statements: If you choose an adhesive solution, it is important to focus on quality. There are anti-slip pads with varying levels of adhesive strength.

For shelves, a permanent adhesive with larger silicone pads is recommended, as these can withstand temperature changes well and do not lose their grip after a short time. Cheap pads often lose their effectiveness quickly.

Exactly. I would like to add that when attaching, it is important to thoroughly clean the contact surfaces (remove dust and grease) to ensure the adhesive bond is not compromised.

Another tip: Mark the positions and test them temporarily before final attachment. This helps avoid unnecessary adjustments, which can be problematic due to some adhesive residues.

This way, the shelf remains neat and stable.

Thank you very much for the detailed information and advice.

I will initially try using silicone pads or self-adhesive foam buffers, making sure to thoroughly clean the surfaces before installation.

If it doesn’t hold after a few weeks, I am considering installing small plastic brackets that can be attached to the back wall with minimal screwing effort.

I will gladly report back on how it went!
