ᐅ How can I securely level Billy shelving units on carpeted floors?

Hello everyone, I have a question that I would appreciate some detailed feedback on: How can I stabilize IKEA Billy bookcases on carpeted floors in the most secure and steady way?

My problem is that the carpet, which is quite thick and soft, causes the shelves to tip or wobble easily, especially when loaded or when using drawers. The shelves themselves aren’t very heavy, but the combination with a soft surface seems to significantly reduce stability.

I would like to know what solutions exist to secure or level the shelves on such floor coverings so they stand firmly without too much movement. Are there any proven tricks, like additional base plates, special feet, or other mounting options?

It would also be helpful to hear from people who have successfully implemented this to avoid common mistakes.

Thanks for any tips and experiences!

Hello everyone,

This topic is really important, as I went through the same issue just a few months ago.

I also had my Billy shelf standing on relatively thick carpet, and the wobbling problem was there. Here’s what I did: I got a thin plastic floor tile protector, which is normally used for laminate floors. They are about 3 mm (0.1 inch) thick and very durable.

I placed these tiles under each shelf leg, and it holds very well because the plastic is stable but doesn’t slip on the carpet.

Very important: don’t forget to secure the shelf to the wall, especially on soft floors where furniture can easily tip over. I also got identical brackets from IKEA and fixed them to the wall using heavy-duty wall plugs.

Maybe this little practical tip helps you.

Honestly: who puts sturdy shelves on soft carpets and then expects them not to wobble? To me, that’s almost a contradiction in terms. Trying to fix the problem with “tricks” or “panels underneath” is more like treating the symptom.

Why not simply place a solid board firmly on the floor under the carpet, or alternatively use floor protection mats, or replace the carpet altogether?

I think the fundamental setup should be reconsidered here instead of adding supports as a workaround. After all, it’s just a shelf and not a piece of art standing on a soft surface – only a stable, preferably hard base will help.

But well, that’s just my controversial opinion on the matter 😉

You have a point there, theota! Sometimes the simplest solution really is the best.

However, replacing the carpet is often a major task that not everyone wants to take on—for reasons of time, cost, or even aesthetics. Transparent plastic floor protection mats placed under the carpet can be a real hidden gem—they provide a firmer base for the carpet without much effort.

Personally, I would recommend a combination of a thin solid board, possibly an anti-slip mat, and securing brackets fixed to the wall—this way you can relax knowing the shelving unit stays safely in place without damaging the carpet.

In short: For securely positioning Billy shelves on soft carpeted floors, wall mounting is the most important factor. Aligning and stabilizing the shelf solely on the floor is only possible to a limited extent due to the flexibility of the surface.

Technical recommendations suggest placing a rigid, non-slip base (e.g., 10mm (0.4 inch) plywood) under the shelf feet, wide enough to distribute the weight. After that, the shelf should be firmly fixed to the wall using strong fasteners.

Adjustable feet can help to compensate for minor unevenness but do not replace wall mounting.

Therefore: prioritize wall mounting, use solid plates, and be prepared for the softness and flexibility of carpeted floors.

I fully agree with this. In addition to the topic of alignment on carpets, I would also point out that shelves should not only be leveled horizontally, but when mounting them on the wall, you should also ensure the brackets are installed at perfect right angles.

A small deviation can have a significant impact on stability, especially on soft flooring.

Also, if the shelf has multiple levels, even weight distribution is another important factor. Uneven loading can cause the shelf to tip, particularly on flexible surfaces.

I’m curious—how many Billy shelves do you plan to install? The number and arrangement can also affect stability.

Specifically, I am planning two identical Billy shelves side by side, each used with 5 shelves. The load will mainly come from books and binders, so not very light, but not excessively heavy either.

Thanks to everyone for the many inputs! I will probably have a 10 mm (0.4 inch) plywood board cut to size, place a non-slip rubber mat underneath, and securely fasten the shelves to the wall.

Your explanations have helped me better understand the whole situation. I might add an update later with the results. Thanks for the discussion 🙂
