Hello everyone,
I have a question about better fitting Billy shelves to my wall. The wall isn’t perfectly straight, and when assembling the shelves, small gaps or uneven areas appear that disrupt the overall look. Additionally, I want to securely fix the shelves without causing major damage to the wall.
What options are there to install BILLY shelves precisely on uneven walls? Are there specific materials or mounting systems that have proven effective? Any tips to prevent wobbling or creaking would also be great. I have considered adjusting the shelves and adding spacer strips, but maybe there are better, more professional solutions?
Thanks in advance for your experiences and ideas!

Regarding how to adapt BILLY shelves to uneven walls, I recommend the following procedure:
1. Check the wall with a spirit level and mark any irregularities.
2. Cut thin wooden shims (about 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches)) and place them behind the side panels of the shelves at problematic points.
3. For stability, replace the original wall brackets with longer screws to allow some play for adjustment.
4. Use mounting brackets or wall holders with slots to enable fine adjustments later.
Important: The shelves must fit tightly; otherwise, they will creak under load. With significant unevenness, gluing the shims in place with mounting adhesive can also help.
This approach prevents wobbling and creates a visually pleasing finish.

I’m familiar with this issue – those small gaps along the wall can be really frustrating and make the entire shelf look unstable. What helped me was carefully measuring the wall first and then adjusting the shelf components accordingly. Sometimes, especially with older walls that have small cracks, the problem gets worse.
It’s worth being patient and stepping back occasionally to see if the shelf stands firmly. At first, I worried too much about minor cosmetic flaws, but in the end, functionality and safety are what matter. Spacer strips usually do the trick, and a bit of fine-tuning is perfectly normal 🙂

For an objective assessment:
BILLY shelves have a rather simple design. Therefore, adjusting them to uneven walls almost always requires additional measures. Here are some clear facts:
- Using washers or wooden strips as spacers can compensate for irregularities up to approximately 5 mm (0.2 inches).
- For larger wall unevenness, it is recommended to plaster or level the wall before installation.
- The original fixings are short; using longer screws combined with slotted brackets improves adjustability.
- Important: Pay attention to load directions, as rocking usually occurs when the shelf is not properly secured to the wall or the floor is uneven.
Planning with measurements and, if necessary, wall preparation is the most effective way to avoid unwanted movement and visual defects.
