Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a new bookshelf and am particularly interested in the BILLY shelves from IKEA, as they are very popular and versatile. My question is: Which BILLY shelves are suitable for really heavy books?

I have some hardcover reference works and art books that are quite heavy, and I want to avoid the shelf bending or becoming unstable. I am especially interested in recommendations regarding specific models, material thicknesses, and whether there are special versions or reinforcements designed for high loads.

Also: What technical terms or key points should I consider when purchasing to assess the load-bearing capacity?

I look forward to your experiences, tips, and specific details about the load limits of the BILLY series!

Hello tralo! It’s great to see you taking such a detailed approach to the BILLY shelves! 🙂

From my own experience, I can tell you that the classic BILLY shelves with 28mm (1.1 inch) thick shelves are quite sturdy! But if you have heavy art books, it’s best to go for the version with metal reinforcements or the shelves with support strips underneath the shelf boards.

A tip from me: Make sure to properly use the wall mounts! This provides a lot of stability and basically supports the load. Then you can store really heavy books without worrying about sagging.

So: Don’t be discouraged, it’s better than you think! Good luck with setting up and happy BILLY shelf building! :-)

Hello tralo,

your question about the load-bearing capacity of the BILLY shelves is definitely valid. The standard BILLY shelves are generally equipped with shelves that are either 16 mm (5/8 inch) or 28 mm (1 1/8 inch) thick. For heavy books, I recommend the version with the 28 mm (1 1/8 inch) shelves, as these have a significantly higher load capacity.

It is also important to regularly use the metal brackets, as they help minimize sagging. Additionally, IKEA offers the BILLY/Förstärka shelf, which comes with reinforced shelves.

Also take note of the maximum load per shelf, which at IKEA usually is about 20 kg (44 lbs), but can be higher for reinforced shelves. Wall mounting is essential for stability, even if the shelf itself stands on the floor.

If you have very heavy volumes, a combination of BILLY and additional reinforcements or even an alternative solution might be worth considering. I hope this helps.

Absolutely, that’s really the game-changer with BILLY shelves. 🙂

I once had a load of heavy art books on a standard 28 mm (1.1 inch) BILLY shelf that was standing without being secured to the wall – after a short time it sagged badly. Then I properly screwed the shelf to the wall, and suddenly – everything was super stable, no more sagging.

Also, if you want, you can upgrade to stronger shelf boards. IKEA occasionally offers accessories that reinforce the shelves. Or you can sometimes find sturdy particle boards in the right size as a budget-friendly replacement.

My advice: a little DIY effort is worth it to enjoy your heavy treasures for a long time. Good luck! 🙂

BILLY shelves with 28mm (1.1 inch) shelves are more durable than those with thinner shelves.

Wall mounting is necessary for stability.

For very heavy books, metal reinforcements or replacing the shelves with stronger versions can help.

Hello tralo,

I would like to add that besides the material thickness, an even distribution of weight on the shelves greatly affects their durability. If you place all heavy books on just one section, it is more likely to sag.

Also, consider whether your shelf might be sensitive to moisture, as this can reduce its load-bearing capacity. The lamination on BILLY shelves is generally quite durable, but heavy loads over an extended period should still be distributed evenly.

Anyone needing a particularly sturdy shelf might consider combining a BILLY with additional reinforcements, such as attaching brackets or extra supports underneath the shelves.

I hope these details help you further.
