I would like to optimize my office setup using Billy bookcases from IKEA and am wondering which version of the Billy bookcase is best suited for office use. I am mainly considering factors such as stability, storage space for binders, the potential usefulness of glass doors, and how flexible the shelves are when adjusting the shelves' positions. Additionally, I am interested if anyone has experience combining Billy bookcases with additional elements (e.g., doors, inserts, or topper units) that make the office even more functional.
Which Billy bookcases would you recommend for an office focused primarily on efficient use of space and a professional appearance? Are there models that work particularly well for storing large amounts of binders, or are certain widths and heights better suited than others?
Thank you in advance for your tips and feedback!

I can definitely understand how important it is to find the right shelf for the office—especially when you need to stay organized and want to look professional.
At home, I used the classic Billy bookshelf in the standard width of 80cm (31.5 inches) for a long time and paired it with glass doors from IKEA. It looks neat and is quite sturdy. However, I would say the standard depth of the Billy (around 28cm (11 inches)) works pretty well for file folders—deeper shelves often lead to wasted space.
What was personally important to me was the ability to adjust the shelves flexibly and add extra shelf dividers if needed. Sometimes it feels a bit wobbly when you store heavy folders at the top, so I always used the more stable or wider options at the bottom.

Hey, I chose the Billy shelves in 40cm (16 inches) width for my office to keep everything compact and organized – slim but still practical 👍.
A tip: If you find the shelves alone a bit plain, try the tops with glass doors. They’re great for binders because you can see the contents while keeping everything protected.
My office looks much tidier and more stylish because of this. And since Billy is so versatile, you can really get creative and customize your shelves without having to buy large pieces of furniture. 😉

It looks really neat and is also stable. Thanks in advance for any advice. I’m especially interested in how the stability holds up with taller bookshelves. Are there any experiences regarding whether the shelves become wobbly when storing multiple binders (approximately 7–8cm (3–3.1 inches) wide) on upper shelves? Or would it be better to use two narrower bookshelves placed next to each other?
Also, does anyone have experience with adjusting the shelves in the Billy bookshelf to accommodate taller binders or similar items?
For stability with taller Billy-style shelves, I recommend the 80 cm (31.5 inches) width combined with additional wall anchoring. The shelves are generally stable, but the risk of tipping increases when fully loaded and with taller models, especially if they are not properly secured.
Regarding the shelves: the adjustable shelves can be repositioned in increments of about 3.3 cm (1.3 inches), offering a certain degree of flexibility. For larger binders (e.g., 32 cm (12.6 inches) high), it usually requires two adjustable shelves per shelf section to make optimal use of the space.
Concerning the width: 80 cm (31.5 inches) is the most common size for file binders; wider models (Billy XL) are also available but do not always provide added value for typical binder sizes. Narrower shelves (40 cm (15.7 inches)) are more suitable for smaller documents or as complementary storage.

I would like to point out that, especially for a professional office, combining the shelving with glass doors can be practical, as they keep dust out while still allowing the contents to be visible. The quality of construction in the Billy units is consistently solid.
If you plan to organize many heavy binders, it is advisable to set up the lower shelves with fixed boards to support the load well. Be cautious with shelves that are too tall without wall anchoring—they can become unstable quickly.
Additionally, add-on shelves that can be placed on top offer extra storage space without increasing the footprint.
