Good morning everyone! I have a question that has been on my mind for a while, and I hope someone here in the forum can help me.

Specifically: Are there any IKEA Billy bookcase models or versions with especially sturdy shelves? I have a standard Billy shelf at home, and when it’s loaded a bit heavier, I’ve noticed that the shelves give in slightly or sag.

I’m looking for a model or version with reinforced or thicker shelves that can support heavier loads without noticeable bending. Maybe there is a special construction method or additional reinforcements that IKEA officially offers?

I would appreciate any tips, including retrofit solutions to improve the stability of Billy shelves. Thanks in advance for your support!

Good morning,

to discuss the topic of the “stability of the BILLY shelves” in more detail, I would like to present some technical aspects that can help make the shelf as sturdy as possible when relying on the original parts.

1. Shelf thickness: As mentioned before, IKEA replacement shelves are available with up to 25 mm (1 inch) thickness, which significantly reduces bending, especially under loads over 20 kg (44 lbs).

2. Span length: The longer the distance between the support points (i.e., the side panels of the shelf), the greater the deflection. 80 cm (31.5 inches) is already a considerable length. For longer spans, it is advisable to add intermediate supports or cut the shelves shorter and place them side by side if necessary.

3. Reinforcements: A practical measure is to attach cross braces, for example from solid wooden slats or thin metal brackets, to the underside of the shelves. This greatly increases the bending resistance.

4. Secure fastening: Proper installation of the shelves with sturdy dowels and brackets is also essential.

I would be interested to know whether you mainly use the shelf for books, or rather for decoration or heavier equipment? This influences the type of load (static vs. dynamic) and therefore your best approach.

Briefly and clearly:

The strongest BILLY shelves are the replacement shelves with a thickness of 25 mm (1 inch). The standard shelves are thinner and more flexible.

Additional reinforcements on the underside (wooden strips or metal brackets) increase the load capacity.

However, I would not recommend placing more than 25 kg (55 lbs) per shelf, regardless of the model.

I can only confirm that the thick replacement shelves make all the difference for me.

With the thinner shelves, bending down at the bookcase was often a struggle because the shelf noticeably gave way. After replacing all the shelves with the 25mm (1 inch) replacement parts and additionally screwing on strips, everything is rock solid and stable.

Highly recommended if you store a lot of heavy items in a BILLY. 😊

What is the span of your shelf and how much weight does it need to support at most?

Thank you very much in advance for all the helpful answers!

The shelf in question is 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide, similar to biel33’s, with a height of 202 cm (79.5 inches). The shelves will mainly hold books, some quite heavy (textbooks, about 10–20 kg (22–44 lbs) per shelf), but there will also be folders or decorative items.

I wasn’t aware of the well-known replacement shelves – I’ll definitely take a closer look at those.

I’m also interested in whether the extra effort to install such replacement shelves is worth it, or if it’s better to choose a different shelving series with sturdier shelves from the start?

And: Do you have any recommendations on where to get these replacement shelves? Is it better to buy them directly in the store or online?

Thanks again!

That’s a good question. In my experience, upgrading BILLY shelves is definitely worthwhile if you need that particular design and size. Especially with a width of 80cm (31.5 inches) and for storing heavy books, replacement shelves combined with reinforcements are a very reasonable solution and usually more cost-effective than buying an entirely different piece of furniture.

The replacement shelves are available both directly from IKEA as individual parts in stores and through the online shop. I would recommend checking availability in your local store or ordering online, making sure to pay attention to the thickness and any model updates upon delivery.

Also, I’d suggest watching a short assembly video or reviewing an installation guide if you decide to go with the reinforcements—as this can save a lot of time.

If you like, I can also send you a few links.
