Hello everyone,

I am currently looking more closely into IKEA furniture, specifically the BILLY bookcase series. Since I am searching for particularly sturdy and durable models that can withstand heavy daily use, I wanted to ask in this forum which BILLY models you consider to be especially resilient.

I am interested in both the use of different materials, such as solid wood or particleboard, as well as the design and construction of the shelves. Perhaps someone has long-term experience or comparisons between the variants (e.g., depth, width, versions with or without glass doors).

I am also looking for tips on optimal care and possible reinforcements that could extend their longevity.

So, which BILLY models are especially robust and durable? Thanks in advance for your opinions and experiences!

I’m also interested in how you use the shelves since I have some heavier books.

I used the standard shelves, but for those that carry heavier loads, I placed thin Plexiglas sheets (about 4 mm (0.16 inches)) on top of the chipboard. This helps distribute the weight more evenly. Additionally, I reinforce the shelving by assembling several smaller units side by side.

Also: Make sure to distribute the weight well, loading the lower shelves more heavily and keeping lighter items on the upper shelves.

Additional care instructions:

BILLY shelves made of solid wood without a surface finish should be gently cleaned with a damp cloth. Dust is not an issue, but excess moisture should be avoided because the particleboard can swell.

Avoiding direct sunlight also helps maintain colorfastness and prevents warping.

If small cracks or chipped edges occur, they can be repaired with special wood or veneer glue, which extends the lifespan.

In the long term, proper maintenance and regular checking of fasteners work wonders.

One more point regarding the load factor:

According to IKEA, the maximum load capacity of a single BILLY shelf panel is about 30 kg (66 lbs), but when loaded near this limit, the lifespan decreases significantly. I recommend a maximum load of 20 kg (44 lbs) per shelf to prevent deformation and sagging.

For heavy books, using multiple narrower shelves or adding extra intermediate shelves is advisable.

Additional tip: Avoid frequently sliding heavy objects across the shelves, as this can cause significant wear on the surface.
