Hello everyone,
I am planning to assemble an IKEA Hemnes chest of drawers but noticed that the included mounting screws look somewhat different from each other. Therefore, I would like to find out exactly which mounting screws are standard for the IKEA Hemnes series.
Specifically, I am interested in which sizes, types, and lengths of screws are typically included in the assembly kit, and what each of them is used for within the furniture piece.
Additionally, are there differences or changes in the screw types across various Hemnes furniture items or production years?
A detailed and helpful overview would be greatly appreciated so I can replace any missing or damaged screws accurately. Thanks in advance for your support!

The standard mounting screws for IKEA Hemnes are usually
- flat-head screws with a pan head, 4x50 mm (0.16x2 inches),
- sometimes also 3.5x45 mm (0.14x1.8 inches) wood screws,
- plus dowels and connector bolts for the joints.
The assembly instructions clearly indicate the specific screw types, so it’s best to follow those as your guide.

The IKEA Hemnes series mainly uses
- 4 mm diameter flat-head screws between 50 and 60 mm (2 and 2.4 inches) in length for load-bearing connections,
- 3.5 mm wood screws of 45 mm (1.8 inches) length for back panels and thinner parts,
- metal connector bolts (also known as dowel screws) with cam locks for modular assembly of the components.
These screws are specifically selected to ensure stability and precise connections.

Are there differences or changes in screw types among various Hemnes furniture pieces or across different production years?Yes, there have been minor adjustments, especially in newer Hemnes drawers, where slightly shorter screws or different connector bolts were used to simplify assembly. However, the main screw types have remained largely consistent.
If replacements are needed, I recommend using metric-thread screws M4 or M3, appropriate in length, and acquiring cam locks separately.

For anyone unsure: The IKEA instructions are quite detailed, but it really helps to sort the screws before starting the assembly.
Sometimes you only realize by the second or third piece of furniture how important the right tools and matching screws are. Especially when putting together multiple items from the series, having a small screw set as a spare is worthwhile.
