Hello everyone, I am currently planning my new kitchen with Ikea Metod countertops and want to securely glue them together as well as to the base cabinets. My question to the community is: Which adhesives are recommended for bonding Ikea Metod countertops? I am especially interested in adhesives that provide a permanently strong bond, are heat-resistant, and easy to work with—preferably those not specifically designed only for professionals. I will mainly be bonding wood-based materials, and if anyone has experience with special adhesives for countertop edges, I would also appreciate any tips.

The Metod countertops are usually coated with melamine resin, so a contact adhesive based on MS polymer provides good adhesion. Thanks for the information about MS polymer. I understand that this is rather unusual for wooden trims. How about the curing time and the odor emissions? I have occasionally read that such adhesives, especially the high-strength assembly adhesives, off-gas for a long time and tend to be quite viscous. Is this an issue when installing in the kitchen?

You should also consider the open time and whether the adhesive can be sanded or painted over.I would also like to know if any visible glue residues can be effectively cleaned up afterwards, in case of some overflow.
So much for the theory – in my experience, the biggest difference often comes down to how well you prepare and work. I once glued Metod countertops using PU assembly adhesive. A small tip: first secure the countertop, then apply the adhesive very sparingly. The adhesives need time to cure, sometimes several days.
The smell is noticeable but not overwhelming if you ventilate the space during installation. And yes, the adhesive is thick and doesn't spread quickly, so avoid applying it too thickly.
I’ve also had good results wiping off any excess glue immediately with solvent before it hardens. Afterwards, you can do some fine sanding with fine-grit sandpaper.

Pattex Power Mounting Adhesive or Sikaflex are good options. Simply sand the surface, clean it thoroughly, and apply sparingly. Dries within 24 hours.

Is this a problem when installing in the kitchen?
In summary, adhesives based on MS polymer are particularly recommended for bonding Ikea Metod countertops. These ensure the necessary adhesion to melamine-coated surfaces and are resistant to heat and moisture. The following points should be carefully observed:
- Thoroughly clean and lightly sand the surfaces
- Apply the adhesive sparingly and evenly
- Secure the countertops during curing
- Pay attention to the working time and drying time
- Remove adhesive residue immediately before curing
Wood glues or traditional white glues are not suitable, as they do not adhere sufficiently to the coating. I recommend using only proven construction adhesives from brands such as Pattex or Sika. The curing time is usually between 24 and 48 hours, depending on temperature and humidity. Adequate ventilation during installation is important. Visible adhesive edges can be carefully sanded and treated after curing.
This ensures a permanently strong and durable bond.
