Hello everyone, I am currently planning my new kitchen with Ikea Metod countertops and want to securely glue them together as well as to the base cabinets. My question to the community is: Which adhesives are recommended for bonding Ikea Metod countertops? I am especially interested in adhesives that provide a permanently strong bond, are heat-resistant, and easy to work with—preferably those not specifically designed only for professionals. I will mainly be bonding wood-based materials, and if anyone has experience with special adhesives for countertop edges, I would also appreciate any tips.

First, it should be clarified whether it is really necessary to glue the Metod countertops, or if screws and dowels are sufficient. But regarding the question:

Metod countertops are usually coated with melamine resin, so a contact adhesive based on MS polymer provides good adhesion. However, it must be kept in mind that the adhesive needs to be heat-resistant, water-resistant, and flexible at the same time. Conventional wood glues are, in my opinion, unsuitable because they often do not adhere well to melamine-coated surfaces or become brittle. Specifically, I recommend, for example, Pattex Montagekleber Power or SikaFlex, both of which are widely used and designed for such applications. However, this should be tested on a case-by-case basis.

Does anyone here have more precise experience with adhesives that have been specifically tested on melamine surfaces?

I have had good experiences using assembly adhesives like Pattex Power or Soudal Fix All with Ikea countertops. Important: Clean and degrease the surfaces beforehand.

As an addition: For bonding Ikea Metod countertops, I recommend using only flexible construction adhesives based on MS polymer, as these provide the necessary adhesion on melamine surfaces and withstand thermal stress. Examples include SikaFlex-221 or Pattex Power Construction Adhesive. Wood glues such as Ponal are not suitable because they do not adhere permanently to the coated surface.

You should also consider the working time of the adhesive and whether it can be sanded or painted over. Proper preparation of the surfaces to be bonded is also important for stability: fine sanding and thorough cleaning to remove dust and grease.

It goes without saying that the countertops must then be positioned and fixed correctly for static stability.

Polymer-based assembly adhesive works well. Lightly roughen the surface with sandpaper beforehand, then apply the adhesive.

In my experience, Sikaflex products are reliable and heat-resistant. I have had no issues using them with countertops.
