Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of an Ikea Metod kitchen and want to cut and fit the countertops myself. I am wondering how to properly and precisely cut the Metod countertops so that the edges stay clean and the countertop is not damaged during installation. I am also interested in the best methods for assembling, especially at the corners and joints, to ensure everything is sealed neatly and stable. Does anyone have experience or tips regarding the right tools, the materials used for edging, and the installation process? I am particularly interested in handling laminate or solid wood countertops from the Metod series and possible protective measures against moisture.
A homemade guide rail is possible, but you should ensure it is perfectly straight and securely mounted. Alternatively, aluminum profiles can be used for straight cuts. For sealing edges, edge banding applied with an iron is a proven method. High-quality edge banding is relatively durable but should be firmly pressed down and, after ironing on, rubbed again with a plastic spatula. In cases of higher moisture exposure, an additional seal with transparent acrylic adhesive or a special edge varnish is recommended.

Is it possible to align this missing guide rail with a homemade or improvised rail, or does that usually lead to inaccuracies?A homemade guide rail can work, provided the base material is perfectly straight and securely fixed. Affordable aluminum profiles from hardware stores or a sturdy wooden batten with a clean edge are suitable as guides. The rail itself must be clamped firmly to prevent vibrations and deviations.

Do you apply edge banding with an iron, or do you use adhesive?Applying edge banding with an iron is standard for Metod countertops with laminate. The adhesive layer activates when ironing, sticks reliably, and is durable. Additional glue is usually not necessary, except for heavily stressed areas or later repairs.
One additional point I would like to mention is the finishing of the edges after cutting and applying the edge banding. Especially with laminate, it is advisable to lightly roughen and deburr the edges using fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 180 to 220) before applying the edge banding. This improves adhesion. After ironing on the edge banding, the edge should be firmly pressed again with a plastic roller, and any excess material carefully trimmed with a sharp cutter. This is the only way to achieve a clean and permanently sealed appearance.

Finally, I would like to know if a certain expansion gap should be left when installing Metod countertops to accommodate material movement due to temperature or humidity changes? And if so, what size is recommended? Additionally, are there common mistakes to avoid when joining the corners?

whether a certain expansion joint should be observed when installing Metod countertopsYes, definitely. Metod countertops expand and contract slightly due to temperature and humidity changes. You should leave a gap of about 3-5 mm (0.1-0.2 inches) between the wall and the countertop, as well as between individual sections. This expansion joint is later sealed with silicone to prevent water from seeping in.
Common mistakes when joining corners include making connections too tight without a gap, which causes stress, and uneven angles. Additionally, it is important to ensure that the countertops are installed perfectly level; otherwise, stress can develop at the joints.
