brisa_bar9 Jan 2021 09:42Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of an Ikea Metod kitchen and want to cut and fit the countertops myself. I am wondering how to properly and precisely cut the Metod countertops so that the edges stay clean and the countertop is not damaged during installation. I am also interested in the best methods for assembling, especially at the corners and joints, to ensure everything is sealed neatly and stable. Does anyone have experience or tips regarding the right tools, the materials used for edging, and the installation process? I am particularly interested in handling laminate or solid wood countertops from the Metod series and possible protective measures against moisture.
For cutting the Metod countertops, I recommend using a circular saw with a fine-toothed blade to prevent the edges from fraying. Afterwards, apply edge banding by ironing it on or secure it with wood glue. It is best to smooth the corners with a sanding block. For assembly, use appropriate brackets and countertop connectors from Ikea.
Basically, Metod countertops need to be handled differently depending on the material. Laminate boards should be cut with a fine-toothed circular saw blade to prevent chipping of the surface. For solid wood countertops, a plunge saw with a guide rail is recommended. It is important to seal the cut edges immediately—using edge banding or suitable sealants—to protect against moisture damage. When assembling at the corners, metal countertop connectors and corner brackets are advisable to ensure stability and a flush finish.

brisa_bar10 Jan 2021 09:11Thanks first of all for the tips so far. To clarify: I plan to cut a laminate worktop from Metod. I have a circular saw with a fine-toothed blade, but no guide rail. Is it possible to align the cut accurately using a self-made or improvised guide rail, or does this usually lead to inaccuracies? Also, I’m interested in how you seal the cut edges, especially with laminate. Do you use edge banding applied with an iron, or do you prefer adhesive? Is the edge banding durable enough for frequent use and exposure to moisture? Are there better or worse products for this?
