Hello everyone, I recently started assembling some IKEA Hemnes furniture, and although the instructions are fairly detailed, I sometimes struggle with certain small tricks that would make the assembly much easier. So my question to you is: What tips or simple methods do you know to make assembling Hemnes furniture more efficient and less stressful? I appreciate any advice, whether it’s about tools, preparation, or the assembly process.

Hello anna59, I think it’s great that you ask such precise questions! For Hemnes, I especially recommend sorting all the parts and screws according to the instructions first and checking them at the same time – this saves a lot of frustration later on. It’s also very helpful to inspect the wooden parts for any defects before starting and to test how the screws grip best. I also like to use a small cordless drill with adjustable torque to avoid over-tightening the dowels. And very important: always assemble on a soft but stable surface to prevent scratches.

Anna, to address your point precisely: it is advisable to read the entire instruction manual thoroughly before starting the assembly. Often, the small details in the step-by-step notes are very helpful. From my experience, it’s also sensible not to fully tighten the screws until all connections are in place – this increases flexibility and reduces errors. Additionally, I recommend using original tools from IKEA or equivalent, properly fitting bits, as the wrong tools can damage the screws.

A tip: Lightly treat all wooden parts with wax or furniture oil before assembling, so the pieces slide together more easily. After that, slightly dampen the dowels – this improves the grip.

Make sure all screws are available before you start. Missing screws will cause unnecessary delays. Also, avoid tightening screws with full force, as this can cause the wood to split.

I found it especially helpful to work with two people when assembling Hemnes furniture. One person can hold the pieces, while the other screws them together – this not only saves stress but also speeds up the process! Plus, it’s simply more enjoyable with company 😉. A little tip: a simple wooden block as a base for narrow parts is invaluable because it allows you to apply much better pressure without damaging the furniture.
