Hello everyone, some time ago I bought a few BILLY shelves from IKEA, which I use for my home office. Unfortunately, over time some of the shelves have become quite dirty – especially on the edges and surfaces of the shelves, where dust, fingerprints, and small stains are visible. These don’t come off easily with just a dry cloth or water. My question is: what are your experiences and tips for effectively and gently cleaning dirty BILLY shelves? Which cleaning agents are suitable without damaging the typical melamine finish, and do you have any tricks to help reduce dirt buildup in the long term? I would appreciate it if you could share your proven methods!

Which cleaning agents are suitable without damaging the typical melamine finish? That’s exactly a question I’ve had several times. I find it really frustrating when, after cleaning, the shelves look clean but the surface shines strangely or has changed. For me, this happened once in a spot where I used a too aggressive cleaning product. Since then, I’ve been much more careful and usually just use a damp microfiber cloth with a mild dishwashing detergent solution. That’s usually enough, even for the edges and corners. Sometimes I follow up with a dry cloth to make sure no moisture remains.

Are there any tips on how to reduce dirt buildup in the long term?I also try to avoid placing the shelves directly against walls with a lot of dust and make sure the room is well-ventilated. It may sound obvious, but using a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment every few weeks helps prevent too much dust from accumulating. Sometimes I feel unsure about how strongly I can clean because I’m afraid of damaging the shelf.

When cleaning BILLY shelves with melamine coating, it is important to avoid abrasive cleaners or strongly alkaline detergents, as these can damage the finish. I recommend cleaning with lukewarm water mixed with a mild, pH-neutral cleaner or a bit of dish soap. Microfiber cloths are ideal because they lift dirt without scratching the surface.
After cleaning, the surface should be wiped dry promptly to prevent moisture damage. For stubborn stains, a 1:1 mixture of water and vinegar can be used, but it should not be left on for long to avoid harming the surface.
For preventive care, I recommend regular light cleaning to prevent dust and dirt from settling. This also reduces the need for aggressive methods.
Hello, in addition to the previous tips, I would like to share some practical advice on cleaning and maintaining BILLY shelves made of melamine:
1. Avoid using abrasive sponges or scouring agents, as they can scratch or dull the surface.
2. For stubborn stains, such as ink or grease, a solvent like isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) can help. Simply apply it to a soft cloth and gently wipe the spot, then wipe again with water and a cloth.
3. To prevent dust buildup, it is a good idea to dust the shelves regularly—including the back panels and edges.
4. If possible, place the shelf in a location that is not exposed to moisture, as humidity can damage the finish.
I also find it helpful to occasionally disassemble all parts and clean them separately, especially the shelves, as this allows you to reach all areas better. This way, you can also clean the edges more thoroughly, which are often overlooked.
I hope this helps you! 🙂
