Hello everyone,
I installed doors on my Ikea Kallax shelving unit to hide the contents a bit. Unfortunately, I have the problem that the doors often stick or catch when I open or close them. The hinges are correctly screwed in, but it feels like they don’t move smoothly or that the door might be warped. Do you have any tips on how to fix this?
I am especially interested in knowing what causes Kallax doors to stick. Are there proven methods for adjusting the hinges or other tricks to solve this issue permanently?
I have already done some online research, but most of the information was very general. I’m hoping for specific experiences or solutions here in the forum, as I can’t just return the shelving unit and urgently need a practical repair. Thanks in advance!

Hello Bepiteo,
please allow me to share a few tips for adjusting the Kallax doors:
The hinges usually have three adjustment screws:
- The vertical screw (usually the rear one) changes the door height.
- The horizontal screw adjusts the gap between the door and the cabinet frame.
- The depth adjustment screw ensures the door closes flush or sits slightly inward/outward.
My recommendation: turn each screw only slightly, for example, quarter turns, and check the results in between. This helps avoid damage and misalignment.
Also, a small Phillips screwdriver can help operate the screws with precision.
And: doors should close without applying much force. If they don’t, it’s better to start over and carefully readjust the screws.
Sanding the door should really be the last resort – only if mechanical adjustments don’t help and you know exactly where it sticks.
Good luck!

I suspect that the moisture in the room slightly changed the stress state of the particleboard, which caused it to stick. That’s why I’ll probably need to readjust occasionally.
Thanks again to everyone who offered tips. If anything else comes up, I’ll get back to you, of course. :-)
