Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Billy shelves: some doors simply won’t open anymore, even though I haven’t changed anything on the hinges. The doors are neither warped nor blocked by any obvious obstruction. Does anyone know a specific approach or tips to try so that the doors will open easily again? Maybe it’s related to the hinge adjustment or a particular technique that’s commonly used. I would really appreciate suggestions, especially if they also explain the reasons behind the issue, so I can better understand the problem.
Hello Lau63,
First of all, thank you for the clear and precise question. This is a common challenge, especially with Billy shelves. Basically, I would recommend systematically checking the hinges.
The procedure:
1. Carefully remove the doors; usually, the hinges are secured with small metal clips – do not use force here.
2. Then check whether the hinge screws are still tight, as they often loosen over time, causing the door to hang crookedly and get stuck.
3. If the screws are tight, check whether the hinge cup itself is damaged or warped.
Exactly, the hinges are usually 3D adjustable, so you can fine-tune the door in all directions. Small adjustments on the horizontal screw can make a big difference.
If the hinges are dirty or rusty, I would recommend carefully treating them with a light lubricant like WD-40, but sparingly, to avoid stains on the wood.
To help you better: Does the door stick at the top or bottom? Are there any noises when trying to open the door?
Best regards and good luck!

Good morning everyone,
I would like to add a note about something that is often overlooked with Billy doors: the flexible shelf or the weight of the items can put extra strain on the door. Sometimes the shelves get overfilled, which increases the pressure on the hinges.
It can also happen that the doors expand slightly due to humidity, which especially affects the opening angle with wood-effect doors. A tip: try gently moving the door into the correct position and see if that makes it easier to adjust the hinges.
And very important: don’t tighten the screws that attach the hinge to the back panel too much, as this can also cause the door to stick.
If you like, you can write again to let us know whether the doors won’t open at all, or if it’s more of a stiffness issue. :-)
Best regards!

Exactly, the hinges are usually adjustable in three dimensions, allowing you to align the door in all directions. This is an important point. Additionally, I want to emphasize that it is worth not only tightening all screws but also checking the door’s position by gently holding it from above and below while observing its movement.

The weight of objects can put extra strain on the door.Absolutely correct. For heavily loaded doors, it can also help to reduce this load and occasionally relieve the doors to prevent warping.
If the door still won’t open despite all measures, I recommend fully removing the hinges, cleaning them, and lubricating them with appropriate products. Care should be taken during this process to avoid damaging the wood.
One final tip: inserting small pieces of cardboard or felt between the door and the frame can help if the door fits too tightly. However, this should only be used as a last resort since it may affect the appearance.
Good luck with the adjustments!
