Hello everyone,

I have been having issues with the doors on my Billy shelves for some time now. They no longer close properly, often remaining slightly ajar or reopening after being closed. I have already checked that the screws are still tight, and the shelves appear to be standing straight. Unfortunately, I could not find any obvious warping or other damage.

Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this and how I can get the doors to close properly again? It would be great if the solution is not just temporary but more long-lasting. Thanks in advance!

This sounds to me like an issue with the hinges or their adjustment. Have you checked whether the hinges are still securely fastened or if they might be worn out?

Another point: Are the shelves fully loaded or empty? Uneven loading can lead to deformations that make it difficult for the doors to close properly.

I would recommend first thoroughly inspecting the condition of the hinges and seeing if any readjustment is possible. If that doesn’t improve the situation, you might consider whether replacing the hinges is necessary.

I agree with theo63 and would like to add:

With BILLY shelves, the doors often have adjustable hinges. It is worth consulting the instructions again to adjust the doors with millimeter precision. Small screws on the hinges can be adjusted to move the door up, down, or sideways.

If the shelves are older, the wood may have swollen slightly, especially in conditions of high humidity. In that case, light sanding of the contact areas might help. It is also important not to put too much strain on the doors to prevent warping.

I would recommend a systematic approach:
1. Check the hinges and their adjustments
2. Inspect the load and any possible distortions
3. Check the wood for swelling

Good luck!

I’m familiar with this problem; I experienced the same issue with my Billy shelves. It’s really frustrating when the doors no longer close properly, especially since the shelves still look great otherwise.

What I did back then was first try tightening the hinges with a small screwdriver and adjusting their alignment. I also lubricated the doors a bit to make the hinges move more smoothly. That helped me at least temporarily until I replaced the problematic hinges.

Maybe this can give you some encouragement: there are definitely solutions, even if it sometimes takes a bit of DIY work to get everything working smoothly again.

Hey,

I agree that the hinges are probably the key issue. 😏

If the doors have been slightly stressed, it’s possible the hinges have loosened a bit. I’d almost bet that a little fine-tuning could save the day. Just try tightening the screws a bit while gently adjusting the doors into the correct position so they close properly.

And yes, as mentioned before, I always notice that too much weight on one side of shelves can cause problems. But don’t get discouraged—you’ll manage it! 🙂

It's great to see so many helpful tips being shared here!

I once had a similar issue with my BILLY shelves. In my case, it turned out a hinge was broken (which you only noticed after a close visual inspection). I simply replaced the hinge, and now the doors close perfectly again.

That might lower your hopes a bit if you take another closer look. 🙂

In any case, it's definitely worth patiently adjusting and also researching the hinge type online – sometimes you can replace the original hinges with cheaper alternatives that are even more durable!
