Jan51Hello everyone,
I have several Billy shelves from IKEA at home that I refreshed with paint some time ago. Now I am wondering what tips and tricks exist specifically for the care of painted shelves. I am particularly interested in advice on cleaning, possible care products that do not damage the paint, and how to prevent paint wear or signs of use in the long term.
I would also like to know if there are differences in care depending on whether the shelves are lacquered, laminated (veneered), or stained.
Do you have any experience or recommendations to share?
Thanks in advance!

Hello Jan51,
I completely understand how frustrating it can be when the paint layer on shelves starts to wear off. Especially with frequently used furniture like BILLY shelves, which are often found in heavily used rooms, this is not a pleasant issue.
In my experience, cleaning the shelves only with a lightly damp, soft cloth and avoiding harsh cleaners has preserved the paint finish for a long time. Using microfiber cloths is also much gentler on the surface and less stressful overall.
You need to be especially careful with laminated surfaces – they can be easily damaged if you rub too hard or use strong cleaning agents. For painted surfaces, a special furniture oil can be used, though this is uncommon for BILLY shelves.
I hope this helps you a bit for now!

For additional information: BILLY shelves are generally made of particleboard with either melamine or foil coating. Both types significantly affect maintenance.
Please note:
- Melamine surfaces are quite resistant to water but sensitive to solvents (alcohol, acetone).
- For cleaning, a pH-neutral cleaner or mild dish soap solution is recommended.
- To prevent color wear or dull spots, mechanical stress should be minimized (avoid abrasive sponges and scrubbing cloths).
- Stains are best removed immediately with a soft, damp cloth.
Regular maintenance using commercially available furniture care wipes based on wax can enhance protection; however, this should only be applied to genuine lacquered or solid wood-like surfaces, as foil coatings may be damaged otherwise.
For color touch-ups, products specifically designed for foil-coated furniture or acrylic paint retouches are most suitable, if necessary.

Here is a brief guide for maintaining the color of BILLY shelves:
1. Cleaning
- Use a lightly damp, lint-free cloth. Do not use sandpaper or abrasive sponges!
- For tougher stains, only use pH-neutral cleaners.
2. Care
- Do not use wax-based products on melamine or veneer surfaces, as this can cause dull, sticky residues.
- Painted shelves can be treated with a special furniture lacquer care product.
3. Protection against color wear
- Do not overload shelves or place sharp-edged objects on them.
- Avoid harsh cleaning agents.
4. Repairing minor damage
- Small paint chips or scratches can be touched up using suitable acrylic pens or retouching paints available from specialist retailers.
Summary: Clean gently, avoid aggressive products, and when in doubt, use care products matched to the material.

Hello Jan51,
It’s great to see you paying attention to the care details. I’d like to add that depending on the paint finish of your BILLY shelf, the indoor climate can also have an impact. High humidity levels can cause painted surfaces to become slightly sticky.
This is very important. Be sure to avoid cleaners containing acetone (such as nail polish remover) as well as alcohol-based cleaners.
Additionally, after cleaning with a soft cloth, you can apply a polish specifically made for painted furniture if you are sure your shelf is painted and not covered with a laminate. This also helps protect against fingerprints and minor scratches.
If certain areas become worn, as mentioned before, touch-up markers are useful. These are available in many colors at hardware stores.
I hope this helps you – and if you have more specific information about your shelf model, we can discuss it in more detail.
