RakomarHello everyone,
I recently bought several Billy shelves with white laminate and would like to know if you have any specific advice on how to care for these shelves. It’s important to me not to damage or discolor the laminate, especially since it seems quite delicate. What do you use to clean the surface without making it sticky or dull? Are there any special cleaning products or home remedies that have proven effective? I’m also interested in how to prevent or treat minor scratches or signs of wear.
Thanks in advance for your experiences and tips!

a few more detailed notes on caring for Billy shelves with white foil finish:
First, you should know that the foil on Billy shelves is usually made of melamine-coated paper, which is generally durable but can be sensitive to scratches. The main risks during cleaning are aggressive solvents and excessive moisture.
Cleaning steps:
1. Remove dust with a dry, soft cloth; microfiber cloths are ideal.
2. For everyday dirt, use slightly lukewarm water and wipe the shelf only with a damp cloth.
3. For stubborn stains, you can use a mild dish detergent, but only very diluted.
Important: Always dry the surfaces immediately after cleaning to avoid water damage.
Scratches cannot always be easily removed. Small signs of use can often be gently treated with a very fine abrasive sponge (e.g., 0000 steel wool), then polished with a laminate furniture care product. Be careful to avoid further damage to the foil.
Avoid sharp objects and direct sunlight, as sunlight can cause yellowing.
One more question for you: How do you place the shelf? Directly on carpet or on harder floors? This can also affect care.

The laminate on Billy bookcases is usually made of melamine-coated paper, which is durable but can be prone to scratching. This information is important because proper care depends largely on the surface material.
For cleaning, I recommend using only pH-neutral cleaning products. Strong alkaline or acidic cleaners can damage the laminate surface, causing it to peel or discolor. Microfiber cloths are ideal, as they remove dust without applying mechanical stress.
When dealing with scratches, I advise against using abrasives, as they can harm the protective layer. A better option is to use special repair markers designed for white laminates or furniture glue to fix minor damage if necessary.
Additionally, please observe the following care instructions:
- Avoid excessive water
- Prevent direct exposure to sunlight
- Do not use sharp or abrasive sponges or brushes
Finally, I recommend wiping the bookcase regularly with a dry cloth to minimize dust and dirt buildup.
