Hello everyone,

I have been having an issue for some time where the doors of my Billy bookshelf no longer close properly after a certain period of use. Specifically, the doors either catch or don’t close flush, which shouldn’t really happen with IKEA furniture. I suspect there might be a problem with the hinges or the alignment, but so far I haven’t been able to pinpoint the exact cause.

Has anyone experienced something similar and can recommend the best approach? Adjusting or possibly readjusting the hinges? Are there known weak points with Billy doors, especially with frequent use? I would appreciate any tips that could help fix this without having to completely replace the doors.

First, check whether the doors are properly hung on the hinges. Often, adjusting them slightly at the top or bottom is enough to ensure they close flush again. Loosen the screws a little, align the door, and then tighten the screws – this usually helps.

Introduction:

The problem of Billy doors not closing properly often occurs due to wear or slight warping. I will help you approach this in an organized way.

Step 1: Check the Hinges
Inspect whether the hinges are bent or loose. Sometimes the fastenings on the side panel can loosen. Carefully tighten all screws.

Step 2: Adjustment
Billy hinges are often adjustable. Use a Phillips screwdriver to turn the screws that allow you to align the door vertically and in depth. Keep adjusting until the door fits correctly.

Step 3: Inspect the Door
Doors can sometimes warp slightly due to moisture. Check if the door is straight and can open and close smoothly.

Summary:
The cause usually lies in hinge adjustment or loose screws. Regular checks prevent long-term damage.

If the problem persists after these steps, replacing the hinges or purchasing a new door might be advisable.

Good luck with the repair!

I know that very well! It also took me a while to realize that it often just comes down to the screw tightness – I was really frustrated because I thought the shelf was broken.

Therefore, I would recommend being patient when adjusting and not getting discouraged if it doesn’t work right away. Sometimes fine-tuning can be fiddly, but it’s worth it. If you feel the doors are already warped, a bit of sanding along the edge might help, but be careful not to overdo it.

One more tip: If you use the shelf frequently and close the doors often, it helps to occasionally treat the hinges and screws with some oil or silicone spray. My doors now operate much more smoothly and close properly.
