Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat technical issue with my Ikea Metod kitchen drawers: I’ve noticed that the drawers are quite stiff when opening and closing. The runners are clean and undamaged, but there is still a noticeable resistance.

I’m interested in learning about methods to make the Ikea Metod drawers operate more smoothly and with less effort. I’m looking for practical and preferably long-lasting solutions, ideally without having to replace the entire mechanism.

Are there any special lubricants or adjustments that can help? Maybe some of you have experience with cleaning or oiling the runners, or alternatives like replacing the rollers?

I look forward to helpful tips and shared experiences on this topic!

The fastest method is to thoroughly clean the tracks and then lightly spray them with silicone spray or PTFE spray. Avoid using oil, as it attracts dust.

Also, always check whether the tracks are properly installed and not bent. Small adjustments can make a big difference.

Hello Jake,

you asked a very specific question, which I appreciate. Here is a detailed overview of how to make Metod drawers slide more smoothly.

First, about the mechanism: Metod drawers usually run on roller or ball-bearing slides. Dirt and dried lubricant often cause poor movement.

Step 1: Remove the drawer, then thoroughly clean the slides with a lint-free cloth and a small amount of alcohol or a mild all-purpose cleaner. Make sure no residue from the cleaner remains.

Step 2: Lubrication. Use a suitable lubricant, ideally a PTFE or silicone spray. These are dust-repellent and long-lasting. Apply it sparingly and evenly on the sliding surface of the rails and rollers.

Step 3: Check the rollers. For older or damaged rollers, replacing them is worthwhile. Compatible Metod rollers are available on the market, some of which are equipped with ball bearings that significantly improve movement.

Step 4: Check the adjustment. Sometimes the slides have small adjustment screws that slightly change the running height. This can prevent sticking or scraping.

One more tip: If your drawers are difficult to load, excessive weight can also impair their movement. Be sure not to exceed the maximum load capacity.

Could you also say since when the problem has been occurring or whether the drawers are heavily used? That would help with the assessment.

Best regards!

In my opinion, the key point here is the emphasis on "the quickest method." But honestly, the problem often runs deeper, and not enough effort is made to address the root cause. Just using lubricants won’t work wonders if the construction itself isn’t designed for smooth operation.

I wonder if it wouldn’t fundamentally make sense for Metod to replace the rollers with higher-quality ball bearing components like those used in high-end kitchens. They tend to save costs here, which becomes noticeable in everyday use.

Also, while Ikea’s products are well thought-out, anyone who opens the drawers daily should also consider durability.

Personally, I prefer to give this more attention and time rather than just applying the simplest solution.

Who else thinks the same or has experience with such upgrades? Is it really worth investing more, or better to just accept the Ikea system as it is?
