Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Billy shelves from IKEA that have warped over time. Specifically, the shelves have bowed or bent due to the weight and possibly environmental factors like humidity. Does anyone have experience with how to reverse this warping or at least prevent it? Are there any special repair or prevention methods beyond just replacing the shelves? I would appreciate any tips, as I don’t want to buy a completely new unit.
Basically, this warping of the Billy shelves often occurs due to excessive load and humidity. A proven approach is to reduce the load on the shelves and distribute the remaining weight more evenly, for example by adding additional support in the middle of the shelf. Humidity should be kept as low as possible, as particleboard is sensitive to moisture. Additionally, you can try laying the shelf flat in a dry place and weighting it down to help it bend back into shape—however, this only works for minor deformations.
However, I would like to add a critical remark: drying and weighting down alone is not always sufficient, especially if the deformations are already significant. Besides moisture, the material composition and quality also play a role. It is not uncommon for Billy shelves to be only 16 mm (0.63 inches) thick and have hardly any load-bearing capacity without the central support. The idea of reducing stress by better weight distribution is correct, but from a purely mechanical perspective, replacing the shelves with more robust alternatives is usually the only effective solution. It would be interesting to know how severe the deformations are and how the shelves have been loaded so far.
When dealing with warped Billy bookcase shelves, it is important to remember that they are made of particleboard, which can swell and deform permanently when exposed to moisture. Any intentional dampening to bend the shelf back should be done cautiously and only locally and minimally. A more effective approach is to reduce the load, install support bars or metal profiles under the shelf for stabilization, and avoid moisture in the long term. For a permanent solution, replacing the shelves with higher-quality, water-resistant, or thicker boards is recommended.

But be careful! Not too hot, or you risk damaging it. 🙂 For the next Billy, don’t skimp on the middle support slats!
